HD500 w/ DT50 - Dual Amps A/B

Hey Guys,

I was messing with a patch I created for my HD500 DT50 setup, and ran into a snag maybe someone can help with.

On the HD500 I have a dual amp setup and wanted to A/B them on the patch (switch between the two within the same patch).   So logic would dictate I set a footswitch to turn on Amp A and turn off Amp B when the switch is pressed.  However, we know that when using a DT50 through Line6 Link, that when you turn off the amp modeling(amp A), the DT50 goes to channel B on the amp and channel B is ONLY controlled by the dials on the Amp itself.   Therefore, my "B" amp on the HD500 becomes redundant and does not work.

Is there any way to achieve this without channel B on the DT50 taking over?

I have solved the issue with a workaround, but it requires two extra FX blocks, by placing a volume pedal after each amp (independently) and have my 2nd Expression pedal turn these volume pedals on/off with a roll of my foot. And then of course, a third volume pedal is needed to have a master volume pedal.  However, i would like to just A/B the amps with a footswitch so I can free up the fx blocks, and my 2nd expression pedal.

I know this can be done without a DT50 (simple A/B).  Is there anyway to achieve this without the DT50 channel B taking over?  What am I missing?

If I understand your question correctly, try this:

Before you set the FX controls, have amp A on and amp B off, then set foot switch one to control both amp A & B to turn off via FS1.

When you press FS1... amp A should now turn off and amp B should activate.

    hope this helps

    cheers

OK...I see what you mean. You have a good question. The only work around I can see is to get 2nd DT50

            Congratulations!

I know it's not the best solution but wouldn't connecting via the 4 cable method (instead of L6 link) allow you to A/B the tones and sill have pre and post effects? I've been thinking about trying this but don't have enough cables at home.

Did you try panning both amps Left?

We can reproduce this here as well and honestly I'm not sure what's expected here.

I've followed up with our QA department to see what they say. I'll keep you posted here. Thanks.

I just wanted to chime in here to say that I am currently looking into this with Product development.  I experience the same ting you do and makes toggling between amps with a DT50 connected via L6 Link not work the way you expect.

        Re: RE: HD500 w/ DT50 - Dual Amps A/B

I think it the right behaviour, see the L6 doc.

I've copied a section out of it. Page 3.9

        DT50 Channel A & B Operation

When any of the SETUP - L6 LINK:CONTROL AMP 1 through AMP 4 options are

set to “AMP A” or to “AMP B,” the respective DT50 amp(s) will automatically switch

        between Channels A & B based on the POD HD500 Amp Model A or B’s On/Off state:

        • When the POD HD500 Amp Model is “On,” all respective DT50 amps switch to

Channel A, and their controls operate in tandem.

        • When the POD HD500 Amp Model is “Off” (or set to “None”), all respective DT50

amps switch to Channel B. The controls do not operate in tandem between the

POD HD Amp Model & DT50 Channel B. When in Channel B, DT50 utilizes its

        own, internal Amp Modeling only.

        • When a DT50 switches to Channel B and multiple DT50 are connected, all

DT50 amps sync to the Channel B knob and TOPOLOGY MODE, CLASS &

        PENTODE/TRIODE settings of DT50 #1.

        • While two DT50 amps are connected, all Channel B knob & Topology switch

adjustments work in tandem between all DT50 amps. The Master Volume

knobs remain independent on each amp.

Likewise, when toggling the front panel DT50 Channel A/B switch (or the DT50 Channel

A/B footswitch), the respective POD HD500 Amp Model A or B to which this DT50 is

synced will toggle On/Off in response.

        Hope it helps

        - Hans

            Re: RE: HD500 w/ DT50 - Dual Amps A/B

I think it states, that it turns to amp B on DT50, not to amp B on HD500.

In other scenarios, two DT50's are connected and then it's is possible.

My way around it is to 'use'/dial in' the DT50's channel B, another way around is to use two patches (I know not exactly the same thing as you want in one patch, but probably workable).

            I'm just trying to help.

            Kind regards

            - Hans

      Re: RE: HD500 w/ DT50 - Dual Amps A/B

Hi Line6Hugo,  I bought a DT25 and I was sure it was possible to switch between two different amp setting in the same patch by using Channel A and Channel B!!! I, my mind, this is one of the most appealing thing of the DT series: be able to switch between two different amp instantly... now I've learn that we only can do this by changing patches......   Since there was no update since april, I'm bringing this thread a bump to know if you will include this feature in the next update!!

    RE: HD500 w/ DT50 - Dual Amps A/B

After hearing back from product development, the ability to toggle between two amp models while staying on Channel A (with different amp configuration settings switching for each amp model) on the DT50 amp when connected via L6 Link is not possible with the current firmware.

For now, this is the expected behavior of the amp.

We are currently looking into whether this can be implemented in a future update.

      Re: RE: HD500 w/ DT50 - Dual Amps A/B

Hi Line 6 Hugo - was just googling ref this subject - I've got 2 killer amps (Boogies:  MkIV and Dual Rec) - and want to A/B them on stage - what's best way using my HD500...?  I currently use 4 cable method anyway, just with the Dual Rec, but want some of the clean/crunch sounds on the MkIV.

Incidentally - I also get a horrible "cyclical" feedback when I use many of the amp sims (esp the heavier ones) when going through the Rec effects loop/  Paul Hindmarsh had a look on one of the demos but couldn't quite solve it...  Any ideas?

      Thanks,

I'm a bit confused with how you set up a dual amp patch and when turning on modeled amp off, you get into DT50 amp channel B.  If you have two modeled amps, then turning one ff with the other still on, will not switch the DT50 to channel B unless you are not using two modeled amps, or you are turning both modeled amps off at the same time.  Or you have the second amp routed in such a way that it is not responding properly.

I didn't bother to read all the posts between your first and this one.  If this has been said - great.  If it's not been brought up, then there is something wrong and it should be very obvious how this gear works to those who work @ L6 and those like myself who have been using it and know it inside and out that are not employed by L6.

If you've not previously gotten a correct answer - you have now.
