First time using the JTV-69 on a live gig. Issues with high e-string catching

Hello!

It seems there might be a flaw with my JTV causing the high e-string to catch onto the fretboard or pickups when I play somewhat hard. It happened quite a few times during a live gig and sounds like this:

this is what it looks like:

Ok, I don't want to have to send this back, so what instructions should I give to my guitar tech to properly fix this issue?

Do I have to take it to a line6 tech?

And why is this happening?

Is there a flaw that future owners of the JTV-69 should be aware of?

I haven't had this problem with my JTV69 at all and I play pretty hard sometimes. I can't tell from your photo where the string is getting caught. Is it on the front pickup or on a fret? If it's the pickup, you might have to lower it a bit. I have this problem with my Anderson Classic- the high E string gets caught on the side of the pickup.

It looks like it's caught on the end of the fret.

I had the same problem on my old Variax 300.

The neck wood has dried out and shrunk pulling away

from the end of the fret.

i would send it back and tell them you want a new guitar.

It cost me about $200 to have my 300 fixed from a luthier.

    good luck with it.

Posted on the expected delivery date thread...

    Hi all.

I haven't posted here before but I did order a JTV 69 last July when I first heard of them and saw some You Tube clips. I wanted one!

Like everyone here I have been very frustrated by the wait but I was called two weeks ago by my local music store to say that my guitar was in stock!

One of the first to hit the country. I headed straight across to the store to pick it up. I couldn't wait to get there. I was a lucky winner.

To cut a long story short I was extremely disappointed to say the least. As soon as I started to play it I realised that it was not good.

As a mainly lead player and having played for over 40 years I could tell straight away that this was a guitar that I would walk away from if I had plucked it from the shelf and not known of it's prior reputation.

But due to the build up and the multitude of positive reviews I persevered with it. After three top e strings had broken I asked for the store manager to come and discuss it with me.

It was impossible to hammer on/ pull off on the top string without the string "clunking" off of the fretboard. Useless for a lead player.

The guitar looks pretty good and, for the most part, has a quality feel to it but the neck does not. It looks and feels cheap and nasty.

I ordered the 69 because I am a strat player and use the tremelo arm a lot. The first upwards pull of the 69's bar pulled it straight out of the socket!

It's useless! It doesn't lock in place. What good is that?

I tried various other guitars from the rack to demonstrate that my technique was not at fault for either of these problems and it was agreed that the guitar was not right.

Although I did try some of the modelling sounds and tunings my main emphasis was on the playability of the guitar so I won't comment on those functions here yet.

Suffice to say that the sounds did not annoy me. Whether or not they sound authentic I cannot say with my limited time with the guitar. More on this later, if I ever get it back in my hands.

I refused to pay for it and it was agred that it should go back to Line 6 for assessment...

I desperately wanted to take it home with me but I could not justify paying almost £1,000 for a guitar that is quite clearly not good enough.

    Very disappointed.

It sounds like you got a lemon. Mine has none of these problems, and I do pull offs and hammer ons, plus tapping on my high E string all the time. Plus my JTV69 trem stays in tune better than my Anderson Classic. BTW, the trem arm is similar to many others- I've got a guitar with a Wilkinson trem and the bar slides in like the JTV. I don't have a problem with it pulling out, but then again I don't swing the guitar around my head with it either.

Yes I do think it is a lemon.

As I said, if I had tried some random guitars from the rack with no preconceived ideas this one wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes in my hands.

No I don't swing the guitar about using the tremelo arm either. I just don't want it to detach every time I pull it upwards slightly.

Personally I think it is very poor that I was offered this guitar at all after waiting for over 9 months for Line 6 to get it right.

I have also been told that I cannot expect the next guitar into the shop to be mine as it is destined for someone else.

Effectively I have gone to the bottom of the waiting list.

        Great.

          Great.

Maybe you should actually buy it and return it to the Line 6 service department for fixing since someone had mentioned that this is actually a fairly easy fix with some attention by an experienced guitar tech? At least then you wouldn't make your way to the bottom of the list, and *might* get the guitar back in short order.

At this point I would probably buy it from you and pay someone to file the frets or whatever, just so that I could finally get a JTV.

    Hey Jason,

I don't think this would be warranty and I don't think it would cost $200 for a tech to fix it. (That sounds like that 300 got a full fret dressing).

My buddy who is doing American Idol, Russell Graham, had this same issue. The wood shrank, hence no warranty (we do not warrant natural properties of wood) and the string was getting caught from a strong strum.

If you have a tech that is savvy with a file, you can have him just file it a bit, and touch it up with sand paper and steel wool. I did it for Russell in about 10 minutes, no more problem.

Hit me at richrenken@line6.com if this does not help or if you have any more questions.

    Peace,

    Rich
