Heil RC-35 Wireless capsule

Hi...
I recently purchased the XD-V70 wireless system along with a Heil RC-35 replacement wireless capsule. I love the sound of the Heil capsule but it has a -10db pad hardwired on the underside of the element. I have been in contact with Bob Heil and he tells me that the pad is necessary so it does not overload the preamp in the transmitter. He went on to say that this was implemented for the Shure handsets. When I asked Bob if removing the pad would overload the preamp in the Line 6 XD-V70 transmitter he could not be certain. If you guys can help me out with this problem it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Hi, Jesse Balfour. Welcome to your first post on this forum.
You should note that there is a support forum specificially for the XD-V wireless products (rather than this "X2" product line forum) -- maybe a forum admin can move this thread over there...
While waiting for a particular answer from the Line 6 technical folks, you may want to check out some of the on-line documents, if you haven't done so already. In particular, the V70 handheld spec document (http://line6.com/community/servlet/JiveServlet/previewBody/2292-102-2-4767/XD-V70_spec.pdf) lists:
Audio Input Level (Max.) : 3.6 Vpp; ~3% THD (clipping)
Is there a problem with just turning up the gain a bit at the mixer?
Remember that the XD-V70 is intended as a 'drop-in' replacement for the equivalent mic ... including the levels as seen at the mixer.
Now, if you are comparing a "real" Heil RC-35 wired mic to the XD-V70 with the Heil capsule, and you find that the XD-V70 requires a radically different setting at the mixer, then ... that's for someone at Line 6 to deal with!!
Hi Dan...Thanks for your reply... Don Boomer (line 6) is working with me on this one as he is going to remove the pad on the Heil and try it out, then if I guess it's OK , I will do the same. The problem with just increasing the gain is although this does bring the level up I find that the mic sounds a little closed off when compared with the wired version. Whether this is characteristic of the capsule or to do with the -10 pad we will soon find out..:)
Many thanks.
Jess.
Bob Heil says the pad on the capsule is to correct a 4 dB difference between their capsule and operation with Shure products. You should be able to operate with the pad removed without negatively impacting performance with XD-V70. It will give you 4 dB less headroom but will improve the SN ratio by an equal 4 dB (based on Heil's figures).
Thanks Don.
So do you think it's a good idea to remove the pad?.
Jess.
So bottom line ... it's a tradeoff. You'd just have to try it and see if it fits your situation.
My "guess" is that it will be of benefit to you ... but that's not an official Line 6 endorsement.
Thanks Don...I have removed the pad, tested the mic and everything sounds great. My gain/trim is sitting beautifully with tons of headroom now at the gain stage, little touchy but the openess that the capsule has now is well worth any other trade offs.
Don, thank you very much for your time on this adventure..
Cheers mate.
Jess.
hi jess, can you show(explain) how to remove the pad? . greets
Hi bazesax....
Simply unscrew the Heil windscreen to expose the element, now remove the 3 rubber shockmount gromets and" SLOWLY" lift the element out. On the underside of the element you will see a resistor, grad a soldering iron and heat up the solder points and remove the resistor. I would keep the resistor as if you don't like the results you can simply re-solder it back on. Reasemble and your good to go..:)
Cheers...Jess
THANKS VERY MUCH MATE ![]()
Hey JessB,
Glad to see that Don was able to help you out with your new Heil capsule. Thanks for all your help Don! If you have any questions in the future, just let us know.
Thanks Line6Don....You guys have been awesome...
.................!
Glad to hear it. I would also suggest that you experiment with switching off the "Environment Filter". You just want to leave it in the position that sounds best.
Hi Don, hope you are well. Mate I seem to have had some bad luck. My wireless v70 microphone was stolen at last nights gig. I need to know if I can purchase a replacement mic? and will it work with my receiver or must the mic and receiver be matched?.
Many thanks don.
Jesse Balfour.
P.S.....The mic was stolen but I had the capsules my line 6 head and my Heil capsule were in a different case, so I really only need the transmitter without the mic head if possible?.
I don't know if they're available to you in Australia just yet... I did a Google search and noticed that one of the U.S. dealers (Sweetwater.com) has this SKU:http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/THH12/
They don't have any in stock; shipment is due to arrive next month.
Please check with Music Link Australia, since they're the Line 6 Distributor overseas for you. The "Item ID appears to be: THH12"
Best of luck on getting one. No, you don't need "matched" mic/receivers. A replacement mic should work just fine with your existing receiver, provided it's set to the correct matching channel, etc.
Thank you Line6Perry.
Jess.
Just a question if anyone thinks getting a 70 series Line 6 hand held and popping a Heil head on it like the gentlemen above would cause me the same issues with headroom etc. I'd like to do this. I've looked at SLX systems...Sennheiser, audio technica...etc. And at the end of the day, it sounds like for the money, there's just no beating a line 6 system with an RC-35 capsule. Almost freaky. Am I right on this? At first I was looking at the SLX or ULXS beta 58 series set up...but the more I look...quality of sound....and cost ... the fact that it's all digital etc makes a difference. Although it's a new area in wireless and line 6 is just making their name in wireless, I think they've REALLY got something here and it's gonna blow wide open for them. I'd be proud to hold one in my hand on stage and I've used everything. All I can say is I'd love to have one. If anyone cares to hear anything I've done to get an idea of my type of voice and tone,..I'm not the greatest singer ever...but I can pull off a Rascal Flatts cover almost spot on if I want. If you look for rascal Flatts covers on youtube...you'll find me...although I won't publically say my name here and let you pick out which one is me ..just for curiousity's sake. =0)
