Having trouble recording on cubase 5 using Pod HD500

Hi!
I am trying to record a guitar track on Cubase 5 but whenever I open up a new project this message appears:
I've already tried to configure my inputs and outputs on the Setup ASIO Direct Sound Control Panel and it doesn't solve the problem. it does however recognize the Pod HD500 as the output.
I used to be able to record using a trial version of MixPad so i think it's a problem involving cubase and some hardware definitions, but not the windows control panel sound settings.
when I enter my sound settings on the control panel it recognizes my Pod as the recording devise, so everything is seemingly fine, but I still can't record.
any ideas???
thanks in advance
From your screen shot I can see that you have assigned the ASIO DirectX driver. You need to use the POD HD ASIO driver instead.Goto devices - configure devices and select the ASIO POD HD for your VST- audio system. This will give you access to the POD HD inputs and outputs.
where exactly is "Devices" located? you mean in the control panel?
any chance you could specify how to get there? (also I have windows 07 so it might not be exactly the same)
thanks :~)
In Cubase 5 or Cubase 6 Devices is a menu item at the top of the Cubase main screen.
File Edit Project Audio MIDI Scores Media Transport Devices Window Help
Click Devices and select Device Setup at the bottom of the drop-down menu. On the right, you will see a panel marked VST Audio System with a drop down box. In that drop-down box list you should see ASIO POD HD500.
Select this to make the HD500 the default low latency ASIO audio interface for Cubase
It is not an OS dependent setting. it's done from within Cubase itself.

when I try to switch it to ASIO POD HD500 like you say, i get this message (The currently installed sound card driver does not support Direct sound input. Recording audio is not possible) then i press OK and i get this following message (ASIO Driver open failure)
like this:
maybe I need to get a soundcard? I have a laptop (HP Pavilion DV6 6020). I don't know if mine is integrated or not...
i think i remember something about an update for cubase 5 you need to install...
worth checking with them...
Perhaps your Pod HD500 driver was not installed, or is corrupt. I suggest downloading and installing the driver again.
See the Downloads tab at the top of this page; select the HD500 driver for your OS. Download and install it. Make sure your HD500 is not connected when you install. After successful driver installation connect your HD500 and try configuring it in Cubase again.
As Zap suggests ensure that you are running the latest updated version of Cubase 5 - Steinberg provided free updates to version 5.5 and these are available on www.steinberg.net
As Silverhead suggests, make sure you have got your HD500 connected to your system (I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on this laptop which has both Cubase 5.5 and Cubase 6 installed, so provided you have everything plugged in and you are running the latest version of Cubase and have the latest HD500 drivers installed (Cubase is obviously seeing the driver as it appears correctly in the list in your last screen grab), you should be able to get it to work.
Just to ensure that your HD500 is working correctly, in Windows 7 it should automatically take over the duties of 'sound card' when you plug it in, so Windows Media Player files or You Tube should play back audio through the HD500 audio outputs. Does your HD500 work like this? If not then, even if you manually select the default audio output device in Windows as the POD HD500 it still doesn't work you may have a more fundamental error than what you appesar to be seeing in Cubase. So, I suggest going back a step before Cubase and making sure the POD HD500 is functioning correctly as an audio device in Windows before further complicating matters with Cubase

Yes, I'm sorry. I've been meaning to reply but I only had time to look into it after a few days and I thought the discussion was closed.
anyways I seem to have solved the problem. It turns out that only after I redefined my pod as the audio output, Cubase accepted the ASIO Pod HD500 and it actually did record, but I didn't see the soundlines vibrating, because the volume was to low.
so thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions and especialy nick for his detailed reply.
