Constant static

Hello,
I am using a toneport GX (I own 2 of them), and I have the following problem:
When I am playing the guitar through POD farm or Gearbox, I have a constant static/white noise on the background.
I have tried:
- Different computers (both desktops and laptops (on a laptop there is a difference in the amount of static when the powerchord is attached (with powerchord the static is worse))
- Different cables
- Different guitars (all 4 of my guitars)
- Both toneports that I own
All the machines have Windows 7 64-bits running at this moment. But they all had the problem with the 32-bits version running.
I know I can use the noise-gate, but then there is no sustain in the guitar, wich I need very much in my music. And still the static is present in the background (and clearly to hear).
This problem occured after an installation of newer versions of gearbox/POD farm/drivers/etc (reinstallation of the machine, and installed the newest versions)
I really have to solve this problem, because one of the machines is going to be used in the rehearsel room for recordings of a Demo. And, understandable, we don't want to have the static on it.
Can you help me out?
(For the Line6 people: I allready had a support ticket for my laptop problem, but it dissapeared somehow, but that problem is not solved as well)
Hi,
This issue could be related to a number of things. First check your connections.
Have you tried connecting to different USB Ports?
Are you using a USB hub?
Make sure you have the latest drivers installed:
Then try the optimizations in our USB Troubleshooting Guide:

Hello David,
Thanks for the reply.
I have tried every USB-connection on all of the machines.
Only with USB-sticks I use an USB-hub, and everything else is directly in a normal USB-port.
All the latest drivers are installed. And like I said, the problem occured after a reinstall. I was using an outdated version, but after the reinstall of Windows, I installed the latest versions, and there was the problem on my desktop as well (I allready had the problem on my laptop).
At the moment I have installed on all machines:
Gearbox: Version 3.72
POD farm: Version 1.12
The version of the other drivers I can not tell at the moment. I am at work now, and I wrote those to down. The only thing I know is that the drivers of my normal desktop are version 4.1.somthing.something. The drivers on my other machine (which was supposed to go to the rehearselroom next weekend) are the newest. I downloaded Monkey yesterday, and installed everything with Monkey.
And I was reading the USB troubleshooting guide yesterday (before opening this thread), but I can't find any solution to my problem (or I am missing something with the reading).
Regards,
René
Is this a new problem, or has it always been there with these devices. You're purchase 2 of our interfaces so it must have worked fine. Also, can you please provide a recordin of this noise along with your playing so that we can hear how loud it is relative to your playing and compare with what we have here?
Regards,
Line6Hugo
This problem is new since I (re)installed my computer. I got a new machine, and hooked it up with the latest drivers/versions, and fixed the other machines as well (updated the drivers and programversions). I don't know what versions I had before.
Tomorrow I will record something, and post it here.
Regards,
René
Ok, now I have something recorded. But I can only upload a video or image... How to upload an MP3?
Ok, I have uploaded them to my website:
http://www.brillemonster.nl/Musicuploads/
Track1 is a recording from Gearbox
With Hum reducer ON, ander the noisegate on -66 dB and decay on 68%
Which is both to high for me
Track2 is a recording from POD Farm
Two amps loaded, both got the noise gate activated
First amp same settings as the Gearbox setup above
The other: Noisegate: -66 dB and decay on 25% (the decay is good, but the noisegate is way too high again)
Are you guys still looking into this?
If you need more info, let me know. I would be pleased to give it.
Hey Brillemonster,
If the TonePorts were working correctly prior to upgrading your computers operating system, then the problem is somehow related to this upgrade. I would suggest that you apply all available Windows updates to both computers, as well as updating the drivers for all of the hardware components on the computer. Make sure to try each USB port on both computers to see if you receive any difference in the static from port to port.
Recheck that you have the most current Line 6 drivers installed on both computers, GearBox comes bundled with older drivers, and if you install these drivers with GearBox there is a chance that your drivers became out dated.
If you have also tried all the suggestions available on our USB Audio Troubleshooting doc without success I would suggest that you try it on a third computer to see what kind of results you have.
Hello Don,
I have tried all of your options, except installing it on a third computer. And none gave a sollution. I'va read something about having a CRT-monitor connected, and I disconnected that one (I am using one), but that didn't work. I always install all of the line 6 stuff, start monkey again, and install the latest drivers. But I keep having the problem.
I will install it on another computer, and I will report here again after that trial.
Hi,
First, make sure your GX's output is not connected to the input of your computer's soundcard. This can cause all kinds of strange noise and issues.
Static is usually related to a hardware conflict or under powered port. First, try EVERY port on the computer. See if one port seems to work better that another.
Now for the hardware issue. Alot of times, in my experience video card drivers are the culprit. Try downloading the latest drivers from you cards manufacturer.
Next what other video/audio devices are connected to your computer via USB or firewire? Does disconecting/disabling a device eliminate the issue? (webcams are especially notorious for causing issues)
And finally run Windows update to make sure the issue is not related to an outdated OS:

OK, the reply-problem is solved, I see. Thanks for fixxing that one! Hello David, I have the gX connected to my computer with only the USB-cable. The output is going to my stereo (tried another stereo, pc-speakers (3 sets)). I have tried all USB-ports on my system, both front and back I have updated all the components of my system (graphicscard, motherboard, processor, and all the other stuff). Including all of the windows-/line 6 programs. The only thing I have connected to my computer by USB is my mouse and the GX. I do use an external HardDrive, but that one is only connected when I am using it (normally it is fysically disconnected). I never let something connected, when I am not using it. I installed all of the Line 6 programs on a computer of a friend of mine, and I have the same static on both of his computers. He is running XP though. I am the only one (of my friends within short distance) who is using win7, everybody who lives close by uses or XP or Linux based OS. I even tried connecting my system (PC, and both of my monitors) to other power supplies (what do you call those things on the wall to plug the power cable in, in English??), but that didn't work as well. Even turning one screen off, of even disconnecting one, gives no result (doesn't matter which one). Regards, René
Unfortunately, it sounds to me that the the TonePorts are both broken. You get the same noise on any computer with various OS installs. They both worked previously, so some change to your computer or possibly a surge from it is likely the root. It would be highly unlikely that both units failed on their own at the same time.
Hello,
You said that infortunately both of the devices could be broken. Well, that can happen. One of the was used with my laptop, and travelled with me. So I assumed that would be the problem.
So, what to do then? I already wanted a device with some more options, and POD farm 2, so I bought the UX2 today. Installed it, updated everything (again, when does the updating stop?), so I just gave it a new try. And what happens: Yes, the static is still present!
Now you can't tell me that the device is broken. It just came out of it's package.
So how do I get rid of the static?
Well, I have found the problem:
I found an old disc, with an old ( ! ) version of POD farm. I installed it, and did not update it, just to check what would happen. And what happens? It works just fine! No static or anything.
I am using version 1.03 now. And now I am going to look for my old version of gearbox, to try it as well.
-Edit: Just found a CD, but that won't work, because the installer only works with "windows 2000 or later"... I am using win 7.... Right...
Were can I find an old ( ! ) version of gearbox wich I can install on windows 7 64-bit??
Older versions of Gearbox can be downloaded from our software page at the link below:
Leave product set to all, then for software select 'GearBox', then make sure your OS is selected. Hit go, and it will take you to a page that gives you access to downloading previous versions of GearBox.
Here's a direct link to GearBox 3.72 Installer for Windows 7 64-Bit: http://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=3121
Hello,
I said earlier that I allready am using version 3.72 from Gearbox. But I want an older version of Gearbox. Because that seems to work for me. Now Perry gives me a direct link to version 3.72, and if I follow the instructions given by Don, the result is also verion 3.72...
So again: Where can I download an older version of Gearbox (and not one version back, but a couple of versions back please)
