HD Pro problems. Help is appreciated!

I don't know if there is a previous post about this specifically already so I apologize for the (possible) repost before hand. But I just purchased the HD Pro today. So I'm still new to how it works setting it up etc etc. My problems are entirely based around the outputs and recording.
So lets begin..
First and probably the easiest fix, the headphone jack. First thing I did was plug in my headphones, plug in my guitar, pluck my first chord and there was no sound. If I plug in headphones to the jack I recieve no sound, but if I plug in my computer speakers (via 1/8th inch to 1/4 jack into the headphone jack) I have sound. Don't know if there is a certain voltage or impedance needed from the headphones for the headphone jack if anyone knows that would be useful.
Second, is there a certain setting on the HD Pro needed such as output routing to use the balanced/unbalanced outputs because neither are working but I can run out of the FX loop (send) to a power amp and recieve sound. I'm sure it's something simple but I didn't find anything useful in the pilot guide.
Third, I got around to setting up hd pro edit, updating the firmware etc etc so I could see how things work on the computer end compared to my previous UX2. And I can't hear myself through my computer speakers nor am I able to record anything THOUGH my default device for sound recording/sound playback is set to the HD Pro.
PS: If it helps any I'm using XP Pro SP3 as my operating system also, my dry out is working and fx loop is working as well.
Any help with any of these issues is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
OK - I'll see if I can help with some of this.
First off, I suggest you download the Advanced Guide (you only mention the basic guide):
1) Have you independently tested yourt headphones? It is unusual that you would get sound from this output jack through your speakers and not your headphones. There is a recommended range for impedance - it's quite high. However, I use headphones with much lower impedance with no problems, and so do many others. I haven't heard of headphones that don't work at all, although some lower-quality phones will not deliver great sound.
2) See Advanced Guide page 2.7
3) You need to have your speakers connected to the HD500 - not your computer's soundcard. You also need to cinfugre your recording software program to use the HD500 and its ASIO driver as the program's audio input/output device. This is different from setting your audio device in your computer's control panel/system settings.
Hope this helps.
