Custom Tones and 4 cable method. Why does my amp whisper?

Hello,

I downloaded a custom tone called Monkeylord by leeanderton. I REALLY like it. But I'm using the 4 cable method while plugged into a Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier (solo) Amp Head and I can't seem to get full volume. It doesn't even get as loud as an acceptable practice level. I know this custom tone can really crank but having trouble making that happen on my amp. I just got the HD500 2 days ago so I'm still learning it.  Other tones that I've downloaded sound fine. There's only a couple that are giving me this problem.

  • Anyone have advice on how I can fix this problem?

I've only had the 500 for a few days myself and have been hooking up with 4CM through a Laney VC50. I have created a bunch of different patches and messed around with some that I downloaded. If you're not using the Edit software on your PC, I definitely recommend doing so. It's VERY easy to tweak settings rather than trying to do it from the console. Each patch I've downloaded has needed tweaking in some way. For levels, go into your mixer and check the channel volumes. You can turn them up. I've also found that if I set both channel pan knobs to dead center it increased the volume. Hope that helped.

I'm not familiar with your amp or that particular patch, but if Chappers (MonkeyLord) and Lee Anderton have anything to do with it, then the patch will kick some butt.

Try simply going 2CM into your amp's FX Return from one 1/4" output with the MASTER on the POD turned up to 100%, the AMP/LINE switch on the POD set to LINE.  Of course, plug your guitar directly into the POD Guitar Input.

If you have a balance control on your amp's FX loop bteween dry and wet (i.e a parallel loop, set it to 100% wet (if you can - I know that not all Boogies go fully to 100% or serial loop equivalent which can make life awkward with 4CM)

Does the raw original downloaded and unmodified by you patch now work as expected?  It really should as your amp's pre amp is not involved.  If it's still operating at a whisper, then the patch is highly suspect.

To convert the MonkeyLord patch for use with 4CM, you need to include the FX Loop effect in the POD signal chain at the correct point (usually after any distortion/overdrive FX and Wah), make sure it's permanently on and set the SEND and RETURN levels to taste (defaults should do it generally, but you may have made some adjustments that have upset the status quo).

Firstly, make the patch work in 2CM and once sorted move on to 4CM

    Nick
