DI Box necessary for POD HD500

Hi,
If I'm using a POD HD500 and running it stereo (left and right 1/4 inch cables) and thorugh the PA that's about 70 feet away, do would it be a good idea to get a DI box? also, would it be helpful to get something like a DI box if I decide to switch two XLR cables? what about for the POD XT Live? Thanks a lot guys!
With 70 feet of 1/4 cable yeah, you would want DI box, but why use the 1/4" at all? Just use the XLR outputs on your HD500, problem solved.
Note: If you do go straight to the board from XLR, I recommend converting to a 1/4 at the board and going into a "line in" instead of a mic preamp. We have discovered that the XLR out from hd500 into a mic preamp is an extremely hot signal, and difficult for the sound tech to manage. Switching to a line in on the board attenuates the signal for a line level device, and allows a lot more control and headroom on the channel.
Depending on the board, be careful about how you convert to 1/4" at the board.
If the input to the board is balanced and the 1/4" connection is TRS then you're in good shape.
If the 1/4 input is unbalanced (TS) then you can lose all the benefits that the balanced cable run gives you (mainly noise rejection) depending on the wiring. You can correct this with an in-line transformer like this http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=240-396
Note that not all sound boards have this issue. Many can take a line level input via XLR. You just need to set the channel preamp gains and/or pads accordingly.
If yours can't take a line level input then another option is to insert an inline pad like this http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=240-416&utm_source=googleps
I'm using the HD500 but only have one line going to the mixer. I have been plugging a 1/4" line into a direct box out to the mixer. I've been doing this because I'm afraid I'll lose something that is stereo with only one side of the XLR out being used. Is this the best way to make sure nothing is lost that is stereo?
My 2 cents. HD500
I run a mono "wye" adapter from both Right and Left 1/4" outs to the 1/4" in on a DI box. The 1/4" out from the DI Box goes to a solid state 50watt Marshall combo with a solid back that I use for my monitor, in front of me aimed away from the house. The XLR from the DI box routes to the board. I choose this because I was getting different sounds and levels from the 1/4" and the XLRs. This way I am more assured that what I am hearing from my onstage amp/monitor is the same thing that is being routed to the board. And by using right and left outs and adapting them to mono, I am not concerned about panning.
I also choose to use a personal stage monitor because at an event, which I montiored through the house monitors, I struggled to hear what I was doing. I will never do that again. Don't get me wrong, I am not blasting my amp, I just have it situated so I have complete control over my "environment". Last night at rehearsal, the leader actually asked me to turn up!!!!
With the flexibility of the HD this way of connecting too shall (probably) pass.
Blessings,
Strato
That's a great idea. I hope to be getting a Tech 21 Power Engine 60 soon and the way you said to connect it up would work perfectly. How do you set your direct box (Pad 40db or 20db or 0db)? I have a DOD 265 Stage Hand Direct Box.
No pad, just a ground lift. Livewire Solutions DI box, 40 bucks.
