Unable to restore a scene via MIDI (M13)

I've followed the how to here: http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-1806
And when that simply didn't change anything on the M13 I found this:
http://line6.com/supportarchive/thread/41380
And even though I wasn't using MIDI-Ox before, I tried that. Still nothing. The M13 simply doesn't change.
I'm using a generic USB-MIDI cable. I'm getting the sysex messages just fine, but the M13 doesn't load anything I send to it.
I'm on firmware 2.04
I'm just trying to make sure I can actually restore a backup that I've made if I have to. Right now I'd be scrambling if this were an emergency and I had a gig in an hour. Help me figure out what to do. This is also good to know for when I do a firmware update (when there is one).
OK, I got it working. First of all, I think the ultimate culprit was my USB-MIDI interface. I don't think it did the job.
Got a different interface going and the files were still not loading, but for the heck of it I tried getting a system dump again. Totally different reaction from the M13 and a total different file size in the end. So my interface wasn't getting or giving the proper messages. No wonder it wasn't working.
So, for anyone else trying this, your first thing to try should really be different MIDI hardware.
FYI, I am doing this natively on Linux (Arch) with SimpleSysexxer and an ancient emagic Mt4 device (that isn't even supported on WindowsXP!
Stay in the mix and in the know.
