Guitar input level too low

I play my PRS with humbuckers through the Mobile In to my updated iOS 5 iPad 2. I route the iPad's headphone output into a docking station with speakers. Using Mobile POD, or GarageBand, the input volume barely tips the VU meters and I have to crank the headphone volume and the virtual amp all the way up to barely hear a sound. It then goes into screaming feedback. What am I doing wrong?

Because this happens with multiple softwares, you'd want to first try to narrow down if any of the hardware is faulty. Test your cables first. Try a different guitar or input source to see how well they output. Also try headphones to find if maybe the dock has an issue.

If possible, try to connect the Mobile In to another compatible iOS device to try to replicate the behavior. If you can, the Mobile In is likely the problem.
