Help! I have a pod hd500, mesa boogie strategy 400 stero power amp and marshall 4x12 1960 lead cabinet, also an overdrive DOD pedal, my question is What is the best way to connect for live performence ?
I've been trying, but i do not feel the right tone that i am looking for...thanx...
Hi and welcome to the forums.
There are lots of different options, settings and ways to set up. If you search around these forums you'll hear lots of ideas. The "best" way is really up to you and the rest of your live setup.
I personally run guitar -> POD -> (xlr) PA and use the PA's foldback (no amp), but your live setup will likely be different from mine.
You could run your POD -> power amp -> cab and then mic up the cab...
Then probably the main things to experiment with on the POD are disabling the cabinet emulation and choosing different output modes (not studio direct). I would not use your DOD pedal for now and use the models on the POD. You can always add it in later either before the POD or in the FX Loop.
thanks, for your answer, but I did what you said, i disabled the cab emulation and moved the output modes, honestly, is the same terrible sound, I''ve been trying to find the right sound for weeks with no results, i don't really have more ideas.

Here is what I would do:
1. Set the HD to Studio/Direct Mode and connect the HD to a great set of headphones or some FRFR studio monitors you know you can trust.
2. Build a tone using the same guitar and HD modeled amp/effects as YJM OR download and tweak one or more of the many YJM HD tones from Customtone http://line6.com/customtone/search/
For the headphones or studio monitors setup you should probably use the FULL versions of the amps when creating your tones, tho some people prefer the PRE version of the JCM800 and have said it sounds closer to a real JCM800.
There is lots of good info on creating/tweaking tones here: http://foobazaar.com/podhd/toneGuide/index.html
3. When it sounds right to you in your headphones or on the FRFR studio monitors it is time to connect the HD to your power amp and Marshall cab and start tweaking at live performance volumes.
4. This is when you will want to start trying different output modes, PRE vs. FULL versions of the amps, with cab enabled and with cab disabled. The goal is to get it to sound as close as possible to the headphone/FRFR version when coming through your power amp/speakers by switching modes, switching to PRE version of amps, emabling/disabling cabs etc., then tweaking more from there as it will never be exactly the same coming through a 4x12 as it was coming through headphones/studio monitors.
I would think the "correct" place to start with your rig would be "Stack Power Amp" mode and with the PRE versions of the amps to match as closely as possible to the results you were getting through the headphones or the studio monitors. If this doesn't sound right I would start trying one change at a time and making note of what made the power amp/cab version of the tone sound more like the headphone/FRFR version and what made things sound less like the headphone/FRFR version of the tone.
There are so many possible combinations of Pre/Full + Mode+ Cab Enabled/disabled to allow for a good sound no matter what you are plugging the HD into, the right combination is in there but it will take some experimentation to find the one that you will be most happy with.
Try the Line 6 M13

Erm,... do you think it would sound good going straight into his Strategy 400 power amp?
What i really want is to get a good sound with pod hd500, i spend money on it, and right now my economic status is not good to buy the line 6 m13, All i want is to get a good tip on how to connect it into my mesa boogie strategy 400 stereo, and my marshall 1960 lead cabinet,
Hey....check out the set up guide from merlin, there is a link up top of the discussion page. All the effects the m13 has the 500 has so I think you could get by without another piece of gear. The 500 is a beast to set up...my set up is using just effects and the 4CM into a Marshall. If you'll put the time into it it will pay off.

If I am not mistaken his amp is a power amp only, I would think he would need a decent preamp to go with it or to replace his power amp with a regular guitar head to get a decent sound from the M13... right? ![]()
Oh my mistake I thought it was a preamp
I understand you frustration I had a HD 500 for a while plugged into a Vox AC 30 and it sounded good. Then I upgraded my amp to Marshall 1959SLP Plexi and the Pod sounded weak through it so I have gone back to stomp boxes with fantastic results. I recently tried the M13 and was so impressed that I are saving for one Good luck with your Pod.

Oh geee I read that one wrong....my bad.....Johnnayyy got a point
Forget the M13. It is a good unit if you want effects only but as others have noted: you need a Pre-amp. The HD500 should provide that pre-amp.
Johnnayy is in the right zone. Try the following. You have a stereo power amp and this brings opportunities and potential pitfalls! Try
If you want to run stereo you must
If you are not using stereo (and this may actually sound better for some of the harder patches)
Try setting the HD 1/4" Output to "Line" in the first instance. If you find that there is always a degree of unwanted distortion, even on clean tones, set it to 'Amp'. The Strategy claims to have a very sensitive input.
For your setup: the standard configuration would be to use the 'Stack Power Amp' output setting so go with that initially. If one of the other modes sounds better all round then fine but start here.
Try grabbing a good set of tones as a starting point. Meambobbo has some good metal tones posted here --> http://foobazaar.com/podhd/toneDemo/. I think they are optimised for direct to desk configurations but still sound pretty good direct into an amplifiers power amp. You can tweak them if you need to. Read the rest of Bobbo's guide when you get time ... here --> http://line6.com/support/thread/71651
Marking this as answered because it's more a question for the comunity.

David
