Any real love for the DT Series

I am consdering the purchase of a DT25 or DT50 to go with my HD500. I've been watching Youtube videos, reading reviews and looking though all the posts on this forum. I know those that visit this forum are only a small subset of the DT User base, but I do not see much positive rants on the DT+HD combination. I am a tweaker and do not have problem reading, experiementing and taking time to dial in the "right" sound as long as the right sound is there somewhere. I really like the whole theory between the integration of the HD and DT but has the execution provided something that is highly usable? Any feedback would be greatly appreicated.

I love my setup. I have the HD500, a DT-50 head, and a DT-25 combo. If I was to do it all over again I'd have a DT-25 head and speaker, and the DT-25 combo. The DT-50 is LOUD! When I play gigs with it I have a either a Vox 2x12 cabinet or Blackheart 1x12 cabinet mic'd off stage to keep the stage volume down. I use in-ear monitors so I don't need the stage volume either to play. The tones I use are faily basic, usually a screamer, noisegate, two delays after the amp block, reverb and volume and wah. There are probably 5 main amp models I use and I set my patches to either use the pre-amp only versions if I'm using the DT's or full models without and going straight to PA. With the combination now of Deep Edit Parameters on the amps, speaker cabinets, and the variety of mic models to choose from there really isn't a sound I cannot get that I'm happy with. If I had $100k in equipment would it sound better? Probably but I have about $2k invested and am very happy with it. Line 6 has added so much more in parameters to really tweak your tones since I've owned it I can't see why anyone would be unhappy with the setup. Now I don't play High Gain Metal so I can't speak on that subject but when I've needed a high gain tone I can get it. I tend to like the old school metal tones so I'm ususally pushing one of the Marshall models versus the Boogie models. Check out customtone.com and you can see there are 1000's of patches out there that users have posted that are artist or song based so it really lowers the learning curve and you can tweak them from there. I found many times switching the mics added the most life to the patches and use mostly the 421 Dynamic mic on most things. I've heard rumors that perhaps in the future Line6 may be able to shift some of the amp modeling to the DT series when they are connected allowing for more DSP for effects. If there is one thing I haven't liked its that on dual amp patches you run out of DSP rather quickly but I really don't use that many dual patches and haven't really had the time yet to hook up both my DT's to really hear those patches in their glory. When using one amp I always use a single amp patch otherwise you're not really doing yourself any favors.
Thanks Dave, that is really helpfull. I am torn between the DT50 and DT-25. I am using a Blackstar 40 on-stage and sometimes that gets overpowered but the band has been doing a better job at bringing down the stage volume lately. I just hate to get the DT-50 and not be able to drive it enough to get the tubes cooking. Everybody keeps saying the DT50 is so loud. Also I do not want to run out and spend a couple of $100 on a powersoak to tame the DT50. Right now I am using my HD500 through a pair of JBL PRX612Ms in stereo. A 1000 watt a side and they can get really loud. I'm wondering whether there are enough outputs from a DT-25 + PD500 to run a line to my on-stage PRX612 speakes (run through a small mixer) and also to the house, If the DT25 is not loud enough I can supplement with a little bit of feed through the PRXs. By the way I bring the PRX's because I also play keyboard and my rig goes through that.
What type of music does your band do and how big are your venues?
Cover pop tunes, everything for Zeppelin to Lady Gag. Our Venues are local Rock Club/Bars, typically hold maybe 300-500 people. Mostly indoors and every once in a while outdoors. The other guitar player is using a Shiva. We've recently went to electronic drums so stage volume has really come down. Also, we always have a house mix with our own sound guy. There have been times when my Ht40 has been totally cranked, but it really should not be.

Since when I play some gigs where I need to have my speakers off stage I will play using a 16 ohm cabinet with the DT-50 so I can push the tubes a bit more. That may be an option, but if I had to shose one way to go I think I'd go with the DT-25 it is plenty loud as well. I can't quote facts but if you've been around you know when it comes to tube amps 25 watt amps can get plenty loud and a 50 watt amp is not twice as loud, maybe 15-20% louder at peak volume. The key is that like you said you want tube saturation you'll want the 25, if you play lots of cleans you'll want the 50. You can always re-amp the 25 with direct out or mic, but after going with 15ohm speakers for the DT50 you can make it quieter without some sort of power soak. I hope this helps, almost seems like I've gone in a full circle. For me, when I get some money I'm buying the dt25 head, speaker combo. I'm disappointed that Line6 doesn't offer a 2x12 for the DT-50 because I have no use or room for a 4x12 cabinet and a 2x12 would be logical to have as an extention cabinet for the DT50 2x12 cabinets as well. As Forrest Gump said, "That's all I have to say about that."
Let me weigh in on this. I've got an HD500, a DT50-112, and a DT25 combo. I've been playing over 40 years, and have had a load of vintage Fenders, Marshalls, and a few boutique amps too.
To me the HD/DT combo is the closest I've ever come to perfection for a gigging setup. I just sold a Matchless, and have a vintage Pro Reverb for sale because the DT's have replaced them.
In terms of versatility, authenticity, and real tube amp "feel", this system gives me everything I need. The Fender's sparkle and bloom, the Vox's chime, and the Marshalls grind. I've got a Marshall JVM, and I like the Marshalls on the HD/DT's better.
I've tried the HD500 in a FRFR system, it sounded good, but I like my pant leg flapping from a guitar cab behind me. FRFR systems sound like a recording of my guitar tone to me. I'm in a band that rarely sends guitar, bass in keyboards in the PA, the venues aren't that big, so I need some stage volume. Plus, the direct out of the DT's sounds really good as a send to the PA, you don't need to mic the cab.
It's a great thing to tap one pedal, and change guitar, amp, and effects(I've got a JTV69 too). My band plays everything from blues/jazz to hard rock(with a bit of metal) so this is the only system that I've tried that can do it all and sound really good.
I've had few problems with any of the gear. Once, the memory dumped on the HD500 and I had to reflash the memory and recalibrate the internal pedal. This happened at home when connected to HD Edit. One venue gives me problems because I think the AC power drops too low and the HD has locked twice. I'm considering getting a power conditioner to solve this problem. Occasionally, I'll stomp on a switch to change patches, and the sound will drop out until I hit the pedal again. That's it for over a year of gigging and rehearsing.
As far as the DT50 vs DT25 is concerned, the 50 is very loud and sounds like a 2-12 cab. The oversize cab just has huge bass for a 1-12. The 25 is loud but smaller sounding, but not in a bad way, because the 50 can get a bit woofy. Because you can cut the power of either amp by going into Triode mode, I'd get the amp that provides the amound of clean headroom you need. If you're in a loud band with a hard hittimg drummer- get the 50. Otherwise, get the 25.
The bottom line for me, I've never been happier with my gig rig. I get compliments from my guitar playing buddies who come out to our gigs. More importantly, I'm happy with the sound, the feel, the easy of setup, and the consistency of tone.
I went to GC to play the DT50. I had a problem getting a good sound with the Master pushed in. If I understand this right, at lower volumes pulling the master out switches the power section to a modeled power section. I did this and everything sounded great. When I pushed it in, I was not able to get the amp loud enough to drive it. For example IV (boogie) got great overdrive with the master pulled out, with it in I was unable to get any distortion, I cranked the amp pretty good but was not going to go into ear bleed teritory.
you'd be in ear bleed territory if you get the tubes going on a DT50... it's loud.
you might try a DT25 if you want to hit the sweet spot at a lower volume.
I have a DT50 head w/ a Avatar 2x12 cab and a HD500. Pulling the master out (LVM) is great for at home playing but I never liked the tone I got in that mode. The problem w/ the DT50 is you need to drive the tubes for that sweet tone. I've said this before on this forum and for me the only option is a power soak. I realize it's a 300-500 dollar solution but it made all the difference in the world. I can't say enough good things about my rig. Line6 got it right with tgeur new line of amps and HDXXX processors!!
which power soak are you using?
I am using the DrZ Airbrake. I picked it up used on Craigslist for 200. Not sure what they go for new. It is a great addition to my rig. There are some YouTube vids on it also.
