Any solution to a Low E String "Software" buzz?

I have a Variax 300, 700 electric and acoustic, with PodXT. Love 'em all, but lately...
My Variax 700 electric has down with a buzz on one string (low E). It's definitely not the string, but rather the guitar's translation of the string sound.
Has anyone ever encountered a Variax "software buzz" and is there any solution other than never playing quiet and low? (Which, uh, I guess I don't do much of that anyway ;-)
Love to get this fixed - I've tried doing a firmware update with no change. I've also taken the back plate off and wiggled the ribbon cable - seems fine.
Thanks much!
Jim
are you sure there isnt another hardware problem. what your seem to be saying is if you play hard its not there and if you play soft it is.
sounds like possibly a failing pickup. or pickup ground.
What you describe sounds like a hardware problem, possibly the piezo element of the low E string. You would need to take the guitar to an authrorized service center to evaluate and repair as necessary:
