Dream Rig - Conections and Best live setup

Hello, I have recently completed my Dream Rig setup wich consist of a JTV69+HD500+DT25, Overall I am very satisfied and pleased with it, I consider myself a Pro Musician with regular gigging every weekend and been doing so for about 20 years, so i have some experience with equipment.

 

This time i decided to give this forum a shot with some questions and to request some advice about the "Best Way" to conect my Dream rig and be able to get the best of it, before i get to the point with my "issues" i have to mention that i have read and watched every document, thread and video that i could find out there and still i am a little confused. and, sorry if some of these questions sound stupid..

 

So, this is what i need help understanding:

 

- I have conected my HD500 to the DT25 via the L6 Link so i can control the amp settings.

now, when doing this, the correct global output of the HD500 should be set to what?

 

- Before purchasing the DT25 I use to have the global output setting on the HD500 set to Studio/Direct and get a balanced XLR out to the FOH Mixer, no amp, this worked well for me, but now that i have added the DT25 and changed the output on the global settings to AMP and using all my amp models on PRE (Right?) How do i get a signal to the FOH? Still Through the balanced XLR outputs?

 

-Now, using the DT25, I have not figured out how to take advantage of the wonderful acoustic sounds from my JTV69 and how to get them through the FOH and not through the amp.

 

Sorry if this sounds confusing but in summary:

 

What is the Best way to get the full advantage of the Dream Rig and get the most of it onstage and on the FOH?

What are the correct Settings for the HD500?

Should i use all my modeled Amps in the HD500 as PRE and conect to my DT25 ONLY through the L6 Link?

How do i get the Acoustic and Rezo sounds to sound Rigth in both, Onstage and FOH?

Is there a Video o Tutorial that someone can recomend that explain all this on detail?

 

All help will be greatly appreciated, thanks for reading.

    Use the XLR out on the DT25 or just mic the amp....either way the line is in the same place...

    Output mode could be combo power amp or stack power amp...

    Generally PRE is what you want to use...FULL Power on the amp...

     

    In terms of the acoustic, I think I would put a DI on the FX Loop Send on the HD500...set the mix 100% so that there is no return to the HD500 and thus none in the DT25...Then it is just a matter of calling up the patch...probably need a little sound check on that, but should not be too hard to do...set the FX Loop to Line Level, stick on the end of the chain and make a nice acoustic preamp chain...

      Also check out Sean Halley's new Line 6 video Dream rig tip #1: Layering Wet and Dry Tones/ Line 6, on youtube which is about making a dual path preset one for electrics and one path for acoustics that you can switch in and out of using  2 effectpedals. very cool

      I'll add my 2 cents worth on the acoustic mode.  I am using the Send/Return patch method, as Space suggests, but with no Line6 FX, via a 1/4 cable direct to a Fishman Loudbox Artist, which then becomes my acoustic stage monitor for the acoustic JTV models, and the reso's.  I use the Fishman's reverb, EQ and chorus - I find their FX better (for acoustics) than Line6's.  Then I take one of the wet feeds out of the Fishman directly to the board/PA.  Works like a charm.  That way, "what you hear is what you get" at the PA. 

       

      If you are not using a personal monitor, like me, then you'll have to set up EQ and reverb in individual patches for the acoustics/resos, in the HD500, but there are plenty of templates for those available on these forums.  Just remember to terminate the patch with the send/return, as Space suggested. Take the send return 1/4" cable direct to the PA, I don't think you need a DI.

       

      We play the Eagles "Take It Easy" in our sets, with two physical guitars, but 4 virtual ones thanks to the JTV.  I do a little tap dance between three patches - acoustic, electric rhythm (a strat sound), and the banjo, while my band-mate plays his electric licks and the solo.  Creates quite an amazing effect.  But as Space says, you do need to do some level checking when you set the whole thing up.

        Very Cool- we are thinking alike. I am now going out acoustics to a Fishman Loudbox mini which has the EQ, chorus and reverb. It is 60 watts very transparent for acoustics, but not as loud as the DT 25 which I use with the Spider Valve Mark II in stereo for my electrics. I just ordered the new TC Helicon VoiceLive Play GTX for my vocals since it has a complete vocal channel with effects, autotune,vocal doubling & an additional 2 harmony voices which can all be gender changed. The harmony voices can be set by your guitar input, and the unit has complete guitar effects from TC Electric for acoustic and electric guitars including modelling. Price is $349. Which is pretty good as it contains all the cool effects including vocal looping that their top of the line VoiceLive 2 has (but that costs $800 street price) Difference is

        voice live 2 has 8 harmony voices, and the Play GTX has only 2, but there are 2 doubling voices and genders can be bent for all of them. another great feature is I can play into the unit so it can set up the vocal channel and harmonies from my guitar input, but I can set it output for "thru" so I can use the Dream Rig for electrics, and the Fishman for acoustics- get the cool vocal processing and bypass the TC guitar EFX if I choose. check out tchelicon.com's video on this piece of gear!

      Thanks guys, after reading many other posts and after experimenting with this i have found that this is really the best setup conections, all this information is really helpful, i am using a L.R BAGGS Para Acoustic DI Box that i had laying around to get the acoustic signal to the FOH and it just sounds great!!

       

      I am still having issues sending the DT-25 "Baked" signal to the FOH, for some reason it does not sound rigth using the XLR Direct out from the back of the amp.. I am thinking i migth be doing something wrong here.

      I am still experimenting and continue to be a little frustated with my "Dream Rig" getting it to sound as it suposed to, It was recomended for me to use combo power amp or stack power amp for the output mode on my HD500 and i have read this in several other comments here on the forums, but i have also read that for some people the Direct/Studio Output mode sounds/works better... I tried switching to Direct/Studio and i do think it really sounded better,.. Yes, Better.. but there is still something that is not rigth.. I just wish i could understand, first the difference between the different outputs and also if there is anything that i can do to adjust or tweek them, Well... No, I just really wish for a User Manual for the complete "Dream Rig" or at least a simple tutorial of how to make it work altogether, should not be that complicated rigth?.. is it just me? i have seen all these videos of demos and they all soung great, i have seen it... so, I believe in it.

    Show us how to get those great tones in a live setting.

      Yeah... but part of the problem there is - like any rig - each venue is drastically different from the next. Sure, they could talk about using EQ to fix this problem or that problem you might find at a particular venue, but it would probably be regurgitating the same information other videos impart.  I suppose they could point out the specific equalization effects/blocks of the HD series, but that's about it.

       

      On the other hand, if we're talking specific features of the Dream Rig - like routing the mags through the DTXX while routing modelled acoustic into the PA, using the DTXX simulated cab/mic out directly to the PA, chaining DTXX for a stereo amp setup, etc. - that's something they'd probably be into showing.

       

      For example, one example - to show off my Canadian colours - would be demonstrating a song like "Just Came Back" by Colin James. The studio recording has a resonator-driven version of Robert Johnson's "Stones in my Passway", right before going into the main song with big rock tone.  You could potentially do this readily with the Dream Rig; if set up right you could even use the expression pedal to perform a fade from one sound to the other.
