Sorry to hear of the problem, it sounds pretty frustrating. I recommend you shut your iPhone 4 all the way down, restart it, update your Mobile POD app to v1.2.4, and then give it another try. You may also want to update your iOS to version 6. It's possible the Mobile In unit you have is damaged or faulty, or has improperly loaded firmware, but when an iOS device has a lot of programs running it can take a very long time to detect that an accessory has been connected. Sometimes resetting the system can help with that.
