Suggested setup with PodHD

Evening folks,

 

I'm picking up a PodHD this week after hearing some amazing demos of it.  I was wondering what is the best way to set it up to get the best sound out of it.  On the demo videos I saw of it I could make out some other rack gear in the background.  Is it better to get a nice tube-pre amp to run this through or something else or does it sound really good just recording it via USB.

      my opinion:

      it sounds very good directly via USB, really very nice for recording..

      for live use it sounds very good through a FRFR system like a PA or a keyboard amp..

      but if you want the best of the best when in a live situation you must pair your HD with a valve DT amp or another good valve power amp

    I run the two line outs into a small FRFR PA. I am tight on cash so I ended up getting pretty much the cheapest PA package I could get, which is this Phonic package (I got it used for $200). The speakers are only 10" and rated at 65Hz-20kHz, so not quite full range, but they sound absolutely awesome. Just excellent response across the range I would care about with guitar, just don't expect to run bass through this. It's extremely powerful (100W per channel) and it could easily take a small club gig. What's great is, anytime I decide, I can just sell the speakers and buy a pair of 12" or 15" 2-ways if I need better low end response. As is, I am perfectly happy though, and it allows me to use stereo effects (beware, most cheap PA packages like the Harbingers are actually mono systems despite having two speakers!!).

    If you're recording to your DAW, then of course the STUDIO/DIRECT mode is the obvious choice. But, if you want to play out live then it opens up a whole plethora of options! Personally, I use mine with a power amp and 2x12 guitar cab. You would think I would go with the POWERAMP/CAB setting but I don't. I used what sounded best to me and it was FRONT OF STACK setting with a few twekas on the other parameters. I also only use the "PRE" models without any cab sims as I let my cabs voice do it's thang. I have two Marshall 2x12 cabs, one with 75's the other with V30s. Use whatever setting sounds good to you! Give us a breakdown of your gear, or what you have in mind. I'm sure someone with a similar rig will help you out. Good luck bro..

    Tech 21 Power Engine 60 and studio direct for live is my choice, Just my two cents.

      Be very patient.  It'll take a while to get the sounds you're looking for.  The PODHD has so many possible ways to be configured, which is great, but it comes back to being VERY patient, learning how the unit works, and tweaking until you find what you're looking for.  It's in there...just don't expect to plug it in and get those great tones right away.  I spent over 2 months until I had what I wanted, but it was worth it.

    Recording the usb out should be fine... Live with IEM's, xlr out's to board.  Live and Loud I use a 2x12 with fullrange Fane drivers a power amp and 1/3 octave eq, studio direct. Fane, Emi, and Beyma all make a fullrange 12. I've heard the Beyma's are the flatest.
