Noise Gate

In the Noise Gate settings:  There is a Setting for db and one for Decay.  What Do These setting control and affect?  How does one decide on what setting to use?

    Adust DB until background noise is gone. Adjust decay for amount of sustain before the gate shuts every thing off. This may differ with how much guitar gain you use and the size of the room. Experiment with a heavy metal setting to see what I mean.
