Mic my guitar cab with POD HD?

hello,

First of all I must point out that I've never gone near miking cabs and all, so this is probably going to sound like a VERY noob question. Here it is:

Can I mic + record stuff i play on my guitar cab, with nothing more then a mic, cable, pod, pod_usb_cable, laptop and guitar?

MIC ->XLR_CABLE->XLR port on POD HD500 -> USB cable -> Audacity

will that ^ work? or will it *technically* work, but sound like absolute ****? or will it actually sound decent? if i need to get into post mic EQ then lemme know, but if its only an option to sweeten up my sound then i'll learn it slowly (+ I'm told the POD doesn't exactly have the best EQs around or something).

thank you!

ps. thanks L6 for doing the saldanos, really neat!

That should work. Quality will be limited by source amplifier, microphone, and whether or not you like the POD's pre amp. What is the goal? Just recording or live and recording. In your example you are bypassing most of what the POD is good at. If it is recording you are looking to achieve I would just use the built in amp/cab/mic sims and forgo the complexity. So GTR->HD500->USB->Audacity. If live is needed do the same but run line outs to an amp running clean. The USB output will be active either way.

    MIC ->XLR_CABLE->XLR port on POD HD500 -> USB cable -> Audacity .....

so basically you want to use your pod simply as an audio card?..

if so, yes, it's possible to record any mic signal.. in the case of a mic'ed cab I would say to eventually add only the POD FXs that make sense placed after an amp..

but if you want to use your mic'ed cab signal with any FXs (that normally go before an amp) or with a modeled amp or pre-amp, you'll get very strange results.. because in this case your initial signal in the chain is already processed by your real amp/cab... if you need some experimental sounds for some horror movies you can give it a try..

in my opinion if you want to retain your cab sound and at the same time use all the POD FXs in the best way, just connect your POD to the return input (if any) of your external amp, and chose the right POD output settings,... or even better for a more complete and versatile solution use the 4CM (do a search in this forum to find this cabling method)..

then mic your cab and send that signal to an audio card..

the POD EQs are not the best in the world but they works quite well..

just use more your ears and not too much what you see when you tweak them, and probably you'll get what you need quite easily..

watch out for the signals volume levels before you get to the EQs, because they can distort..

...do you have to somehow pass it through a compressor or pre-amp or eq or something to perhaps make it sound more like a studio miked clip?-mif

not necessarily, but you can try to use the Vintage Pre fx to add some warmth and the Tube Comp studio compressor fx to add some punch to the sound..

        ....so would it work?

yes, it can work as a simple audio card..
