i use my pod hd500 into my tube combo, which sounds great, but when i try to use it plugged into computer through usb, the amp starts to hum badly????
is there any way around this? will this happen with monitors or headphones???
btw, the amp is a traynor ycv20wr
You have a ground loop. In other words you are providing an alternate ground for the amp through the pod and the computer. I had to "ground lift" my PC and anything connected to my pc in past to deal with this issue. Easiest way to do this is get an bunch of three prong to 2 prong converters http://www.amazon.com/Prong-prong-grounding-converter/dp/B000I96AUM and plug your monitor, PC, printer, etc into them and then into the outlet. This will remove the capability for the amp to ground through the PC. Hope this helps.
Be aware that this method of ground lifting can kill you in the event of failure.
Excellent article in this thread: http://line6.com/support/thread/72223
Mainly if you disconnect the amp from its ground, but I did not advise that. Most PC and small computer interface power transformers are more isolated and present less risk of grounding through you. In this case the PC failure would find ground throungh the amp. There are more elegant solutions. The article referanced is a good one. If my method works then at least you know the source of the ground loop and you can seek safer alternatives. Yes I should put the disclaimer that futzing with electricity can be dangerous. Oh, and dont run with scissors ![]()

The danger is if you don't have the PC hooked up to the amp all the time, because if you take away the connection between the two, your PC has no earth at all, and, in the event of failure, could make the whole metal chassis live with mains current that's just dying to leap through you to earth.
Agreed there is a risk in that case. Pretty sure drivng my car puts me at higher risk of fatality. At 110v current the risk is low but there. If your running 220 it's a bit more serious if the condition occurs. Running a GFI outlet mitigates this quite a bit. In the case of transformer failure your computer will not be running, so that should be a clue not to hug it. Other things to avoid while operating your computer with the ground removed:
Touching the chassie while standing on metal or in salt water
Operating it with a metal keyboard or mouse (because plastic isn't cold enough)
Using unpainted cases
Licking, kissing, hugging or other amorous behavior toward your PC other than blowing it kisses
Deffinately no teledildonics
I jest and in the strictest litigative sense there is a danger of harm including death. The USB device I linked should mitigate the pc issue with no ground removal if you determine it to be the issue. Removing the ground from the amp is serious as you are in constant contact with the metal strings and are part of the ground circut. Remember to have fun kids. Chim chim charooo!
One more small note. If you use the usb device that I linked make sure that you actually do have the ground on your PC otherwise you will fulfill the condition that was discussed by GTLazer in that the PC is no longer grounding through the amp. See the first video below for referance.
do a search on google for: hum killer, hum eliminator, hum destroyer, ground loop isolator etc. etc.
