Yes, it will work fine. To reduce noise, keep the volume down on the inactive guitar.
You could even have people playing both guitars at the same time, but with their inputs combined like that it would sound pretty weird. In that case you'd want to set up dual paths.

Sure - no problem. To msake sure there is no extraneous noise (as an alternative to mdmayfield's suggestion) you could use separate patches for each guitar and set the Input accordingly - to Guitar OR Variax (not AND).

I do this weekly with a Taylor acoustic hooked up and turned down on my XTlive. That way I can use not only the effects but the EQ and compression on the POD for the acoustic. I just created patches that have no amp model. The sound guy likes not having to use an extra channel or a DI box too.

I also did this for years on my XTL, X3L, and now my HD500. Regular guitar in the the guitar in, variax in the VDI. Turn down the volume on the guitar not in use. Set the input parameter to variax + guitar. I used the same main patches for both. I also for a few years used a 3rd guitar -- an Ovation acoustic/electric on the Aux In, but I only set the Aux In (think I used Variax + Guitar + Aux) active for the acoustic patches I had set up for that guitar, so I had 3 guitars plugged in at once with the X3L and HD500. It was good that I just pulled the guitar off the stand and rolled up the volume and was good to go. You do have to remember to roll off the volume in the guitar you're not using, as often you will get sympathetic sounds from the guitar on the stands -- kind of embarrasing and annoying...

Thanks everyone. I hoped that this would be the case.............can't wait to give it a try. Should eliminate at least 3 guitars, one only gets used for Jumpin Jack Flash(singers request) tuned EBEEBE.
Once again, thanks to all.
