Some of the hi-gain amps have a harshness and shrillness to them

I've been experimenting with the Treadplate and the Angel Fireball. While I generally like the sound of both those amps they always sound kinda harsh and shrill in the treble strings. They have a nice big, large sound which I like and they have loads of gain which I like also, but how do I tame the shrillness and ice-pickyness?

I'm currently not using any Equalizers cuz they seem hard to use.

A lot of things can fix this.  If you're Presence is set high then reduce Treble and vice versa.

Here's a link to the BlackSabbath patch I use.  Maybe something in there will help.  Although Input-Z at 32k helped me a bunch.

You will have to rename the patch to BlackSabbath.hb5 if you have a POD HD500.
