JTV Neck Replacement Pics

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I am in the process of replacing me JTV 69 neck and have been scouring the forums for pics, There seem to be a few threads out there and tricky to find so I thought i would start a thread where people who have done so in the past can post there pics .

Two pics i found on this forum so far are below. They are not mine but thought it would be a start.

Please take credit for them if they are yours :)

Rosewood fingerboard was origional posted by

snhirsch

and the Maple fingerboard was original posted by

infor-bumeran

and please, if you have replaced your neck do post some pics. I will certainly post some of mine when done!!!

:)

Hi, no not a compound radius but that's not huge for. The big improvement for me is the neck shape. I am very impressed with the quality of the neck. Frets are finished nicely and live the oversized headstock.

Will post picks when done.

Would love to see pics of yours!

Infinite improvement...

Pardon the orientation of the pics...no idea why they all got flung 90 degrees to the west.

that Birds Eye is stunning. Mine is a Mighty Mite with oversized headstock. the neck slotted into place easily enough and had the nut swapped for a bone one. All in all extremely happy!

have this decal ready to go (i had grand aspirations of designing an original one but those died pretty quickly, and we all know how well 'original design' went for the tyler neck and headstock!  :D  :D  :D )

for now i am liking the blank headstock. will give it some tim and decide whether or not to add the decal.

also..at first i wasn't happy with the original pick guard shape but with the new neck i really like it.. they offset each other nicely.

Very nice job!  Did you have any issues with fitting the neck?

hey charlie, i just dropped it in to a local luthier who fitted it and added a bone nut. only charged me 50 bucks,  he said the neck went in without hassle and settled quickly. was gonna do it myself but my we just had a baby so between running to and from the hospital etc i figured it easier to drop it in and collect two days laters.

FWIW, I had a lot of tuning stability issues with a bone nut on my JTV-69.  They work great for guitars with a fixed tailpiece (I have one on my Les Paul), but tend to "grab" the string on tremolo bar dives, causing it to come back sharp.  Finally swapped it for a Graphtec lubricated nut and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks, I like the look of yours too. I had a hard time deciding between the red and the tobacco burst at first. FWIW, I like a blank headstock...i'd leave it as is. Enjoy it!

Love the pics, folks.  I'm thinking of doing a swap myself.

I struggle with the string tension on my JTV-69S.  Even with a pro setup, my fretting hand gets pretty exhausted after awhile.  On any Strat or Tele with the same gauge strings (.010s), I'm all good.

I don't know - maybe it has something to do with the fretwire on the stock JTV necks?

For those of you that did the swap, do you find that the string tension changed at all (for better or worse)?  Thanks!

Doubt its the frets...stock neck is a baseball bat.

When I got my JTV 69 the string tension was tough - the action a little high - I had it set up which included lowering the slots in the nut a small amount and when I got it back the string tension felt just like my Strats and other trem guitars with 10's. It was much easier to play after the setup and the nut slot adjustment - it felt like a normal guitar (well one with a chunky neck).  If your JTV69 is set up professionally the same as your Strat then the tension for the same gauge strings should feel the same.  Strings can feel harder to bend if the break angle over the nut is steeper than an equivalent guitar or if your nut slots are too high meaning you have to push the strings down further to make contact with the top of the frets in the lower positions. The fret height should not matter as you only need to press the strings down to the top of the fret and not down to the fret board which is way below and which would make your notes go sharp anyway.  As crusinon2 says - it's probably because you are not accustomed to the chunkier neck and the stretch between your thumb and fingers when fretting is greater than with your other guitars which leads to your hand feeling more tired more quickly.

That factory nut (my 69S was one of the Sweetwater 2nds) was in awful shape. String heights at that first fret were all over the place.  So that was the first adjustment I had made, along with a pro setup.

I don't struggle as muck with a similarly-chunky LP I have.  But maybe it has something to do with the angle of things over the neck, to your point.  In any case, a replacement neck might be an interesting experiment (plus a nice item for the Xmas list)...

OK....just couldn't help myself,,, i had to stick the decal on.. glad i did!  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)

all in all it has come together nicely.. and still plays like a dream!!!

That's mad awesome. Your guitar would honestly probably be my ultimate dream guitar. 69 Variax with the humbucker, sunburst body,  and that awesome fender-esque maple fretboard/neck with the decals.

You sir have the ultimate guitar.

Here's a few pics of my JTV-69 with the new Warmouth neck I put on it. It's a mahogany neck with Bubinga fret board. Earvana nut, SS6150 frets, Standard Slim profile, compound radius. I'm having another Warmouth neck made that will go on a JTV-69S. It will be a short scale, birds eye maple neck and fretboard with the Wizard profile. Another month before I get that one.

I know this is an old post, but I recently picked up a JTV-69 myself. The neck isn't horrible but ideally I would like it more with a few changes and am thinking of swapping it out. Warmoth seems like the ideal place to get exactly what you want. I am still trying to decide on some options. I am curious how the neck with the short scale worked out for you. I'm not sure I will do that but I am considering it. Also, the Earvana nut. I put one of those on a previous guitar and I thought it did improve tuning on chords in the open position. Some people say it doesn't really do anything but I could hear a difference. How does that work for you with using the vibrato bar? any different that a standard nut in that regard?

Thanks

I had three JTV's at the same time. I only kept the JTV69 with the mahogany / bubinga neck. I sold the JTV69S with the short scale, maple neck. I decided the short scale wasn't doing anything for me. There was a noticeable difference in tone between the maple and mahogany neck, and I decided I liked the mahogany better. The earvana nut is something that doesn't make a huge difference, but every bit helps. So when ever I have the opportunity, I choose to use one. Both guitars that I now have with them are very stable. They both have a trem which I use a lot, but they hold their tune very well. My only negative on the Warmoth necks is I would never order a "Modern" again. I had the Gotoh side adjuster crack on one, which left me having to remove the neck to make truss rod adjustments. Not exactly modern. If I order another Warmoth neck it will be a "Vintage / Modern". Here's a photo of my two JTV 69's, while I had them.
