Dual tone question

Recommended Posts

Howdy all!

Has anyone tried a dual tone patch using a DT50 and a DT25? I notice most posts about about dual tones are using either 2 DT50's or 2 DT25's or a DT and L series.

Care to share what model selection works best for which amp in this configuration?

Thanx

Not sure why it would make any difference?  They both have the same models and other than a couple of minor tweaks in the 50 and the tube differences, they should be a good match together.  Obviously volume could be a factor and depending on what actual cabs you are playing through.  Interesting question though...

My initial thought would be to drive my more distorted amps through the DT25 and my cleaner stuff through the 50. probably over thinking it a bit. I just know if I am doing a bluesy set, I tend to bring my 35 watt'er  cause I can push it and break it up without ear shattering volume. And if I am doing something where I need to be cleaner at a good volume, I need the 50 watt'er.

Wondering if that matters in a dual tone setting in Dream rig world.

Relatively they both work the same; functionality wise. The DT50 (EL34's) is going to give a slightly different character in the power amp section than the DT25 (EL84's), that is just of matter of preference for tube type. I typically recommend the DT25 for club sizes that hold 5-150 and DT50 for 150+. Using dual tone and stereo effects with two DT's at once sounds fantastic! It is also cool to involve the JTV with alternate tuning and Mag+Variax features (See video link below).

If you tend to incorporate an acoustic or full range instrument in your set, getting a StageSource may be a better route to go. Yea you lose the tube power, but power amp modeling is still in play and full range instruments translate better through that system. In a perfect world you can incorporate both the DT and Stagesource together.

We'll my rig keeps on getting bigger and bigger. As of today I am running a DT25, a DT50 and an L2M with the HD 500. I've got a EH Super Ego and a Boss rotary in the FX loop.

This is where the "Dream" in Dream Rig lives! Dual tones have taken on a whole new meaning for me. Being able to mix in acoustic guitar in my live show through the L2M is going to be incredible. (have not done it live yet. Only in rehearsal so far)

I could go on and on. The bottom line is that the DT'S work very well together.

The only problem I am having at the moment deals with the fact that the HD Edit is not on the iPad. When line 6 going to make that happen!

Could you describe what you do in terms of L6Link configuration, specifically in terms of linking the two DT amps to the HD500? I am reading through the Link .PDF, and I think I have a good grasp. Just wondering how folks are programming / setting up their rigs.

I currently use a single DT25; looking at possibly adding a second DT25 combo; for the dual amp models, and to run in stereo.

If I understand it correctly, if you use two amp models, and configure the two DT's to be the left and right, the first DT will configure it's power amp according to the amp model A in the HD500 and the second DT will configure it's power amp according to the amp model B in the HD500.

L6 configuration is HD-->DT25-->DT50-->L2M. Not sure about the power amp stuff. So far, I have been all over the map in playing with the set up. I like using amp A and amp B for the DT'S. It seems I have more control of the DT'S this way. As for any of the other available configurations, it's like freezing around in a dark room. Line 6 did promise us a series of videos that would shed some light on this beast but they gave up after on 3 or so. As I learn more, I will share.

Yeah, that makes sense - then you set the L2m to be A+B? Sort of like, the two DT's are the stereo / dual amp portion, and the L2m is the center / audio fill. I think that also makes sense in terms of you saying that you have more control over the DT's that way. Essentially that configuration is more than just 'stereo' it's also dual amp configurations - and with the L6Link giving each amp the ability to control it's corresponding amp model settings in the HD500, and that to a certain extent is key. The DT up on an amp stand is particularly easy to adjust since the knobs are all on top, rather than on the 'face' like the DT50 versions and the DT25 head.

I think the key to figuring out the DT's is the power amp settings. While the HD500 technically models all those, it's really different that how the DT responds. I am (for now) resisting the G.A.S. telling me to order another DT25 combo.. It's gonna be difficult! Though with NAMM right around the corner, at least I have some reasonably target to wait another 12 days before I plunk down $1k on another DT25.

So I have plunked, bought into (literally) the whole dream rig.  Still in my first few weeks and I too have been all over the map with settings.

I have JTV-69S>POD HD 500X>DT25>DT 25 combo>L3t.

I have been setting DT25 to Amp A, DT25 combo to Amp B, and L3t as A/B Amp 3.  Changing Amp 4 doesn't seem to have any affect.

The volume from all three is very unpredictable.  Have been using the mixer to adjust the DT's but I have not figured out how to control the mix of the A/B Amp 3.  Anyone?

I did see another post about updating the amps with MIDI link to USB.  I did this and updated both DT's from Flash Memory 1.0 to 2.0.  Don't really notice what happened.

Have been having fun working on this shtuff but man it is a lot to take in/learn.

I'm telling ya a tips and tricks video series would be so cool! I like playing with my gear but because some of us have decided to invest in a more comprehensive rig set up, it starts to feel like my golf game. Every now and then I connect with the ball but can't tell you how I did it nor am I guaranteed to be able to reproduce the same result!

It shouldn't have to be that way.

:) That is an awesome analogy.   Hopefully I can figure this dream rig out better than my golf game.

Yes to tips, tricks, and really just help!

Tboneus, I haven't tried your setup yet.  Is it still working for you? Expression pedal on the L for acoustic.

Have been playing around with the HD Edit mixer and guitar inputs.  Have discovered another layer of squirreliness.

Have been changing the guitar inputs, 1 and 2.  Changing both to Variax, combinations of others including Variax Mags, etc. seems to change even the output of the DT's an L at times.  Have not worked that out yet.

Also have been changing the amp audio and control options in various ways. Channel A, B, A/B, left/right etc. Have tried all three on, say, MIDI 3 and this changes the outputs of the speakers and sound of the guitar. Still working on that as well.

At this point, tips or tricks from anyone would be appreciated.
