Johnbee
Hi. I've owned a Pod Studio UX2 interface for several years now and I am very happy with its performance and how easy it is to use. I work with Sonar X3 Studio and I've been under the impression that I needed to have ASIO4ALL on board to record and monitor MIDI instruments. Having talked with some members of the Cakewalk forum on this subject and buffer/latency problem, they advised me to uninstall ASIO4ALL as it is only really used to record audio. When I record audio (vocal track) I use the ASIO drivers provided for the UX2 but switch to ASIO4ALL when doing the final mix. I was advised that it would serve me better to uninstall ASIO4ALL and monitor everything through the UX2, which I would like to try, but other than just plugging my cheap IPOD type monitor speakers into the UX2s headphone jack, I would rather use the outputs on the back of the UX2. Could you please direct me to instructions on how to do that through the INPUT jack of the PC. What kind of Y connector do I need and how would I set my desktop PC up to do this correctly? Thank you very much! John B.
BillBee
From the ole L6 archives :) This should work. -B Hi, Run the analog outputs of your TonePort into the Line Input of your computer. This will only work if you have external computer speakers connected to your computer. You'll need to purchase a y cable with two (2) 1/4" mono leads on one end (connect these to the TonePort) and one (1) 1/8" stereo lead on the other end (conenct this to your computer's Line In). Johnbee
Thank you, Billbee. But don't I also have to do something in the PCs software to activate the Line In? JB
BillBee
IIRc there is a mixer control in WinXP (what I have) where you can set the input volume for the line in. I generally use an amp or headphones w/ Reaper myself. Someone who knows better than I will most likely pop by who is familiar with Sonar and if there are any required settings. -B
Triryche
Not too familiar with Sonar, but this is the type of cable to route the L/R analog outs to your pc's Line In. http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-CMP153-Cable-Inch-Dual/dp/B000068O3C How are you monitoring your sound in Sonar? The reason I ask is htere is probably a better solution than plugging you UX analog outs into your pc, and if you are wanting to that to use the UX as your interface for final mix, it is not the correct approach. Johnbee
Monitoring Sonar through UX2 drivers to record vocals. To record MIDI and mix I use ASIO4ALL. JB
Triryche
What I mean is how are you hearing it. PC Speakers, headphones...?
Johnbee
Headphones when using UX2. Speakers every other time JB
Triryche
So you could either plug you speakers (I'm assuming powered pc speakers?) into the UX (optimal) or change the sound device in Sonar to your pc's soundcard when you are mixing. Trying to plug the UX analog outs into the pc for the sake of trying to using the UX during mixing with your pc speakers will likely cause issues. I'm sure. I could plug the speakers into the headphone jack, but it's kind of a pain to disconnect them from the back of the PC. I have it in a rather odd position due to space constraint. I didn't think it would be a good idea to mix through the UX2 either. But I want to get rid of ASIO4ALL because it's causing me issues in processor use and latency. Somebody on the Sonar forum suggested I get rid of ASIO4ALL and use other drivers for mixing and MIDI recording (writing). Thanks John B. Triryche
Technically your DAW is doing the mixing with your computers processing power.
Johnbee
Is there any other way, or a better one?
Triryche
The best way without purchasing moire gear is to connect your speakers to the UX. It will become tour soundcard, so you do not need to switch wires back and forth, just one time. Better would be invest in a small mixer and studio monitors. Or you could leave everything as is and just change the sound device in your DAW between the UX and you pc's soundcard.
