Should the light that shows whether the amp is in Class A/B or Class A operation automatically switch when you select the different topologies? when I select topology III (Vox AC30) the light stays on for Class A/B operation. Shouldn't it switch and light up Class A?

Thanks.

Class A/AB and topology are two separate and independent parameters.  The class defines how the amp operates (10/25 watt DT-25, 25/50 watt DT-50) and the topology refers to the negative feedback loop (you will have to google it to learn more).  The light stays for each paramter by itself.  VOX AC30 is class AB, topo I.

Not sure if you are using your amp standalone, in which case the topology switch chooses one of the four loaded amp models for each channel.  You would have to use a 3rd party editor via midi to configure them.  The editor can be found in the POD HD forum.

If you use HD Edit even off line you can load an amp model and see what its default configuration is.

I'm using the amp as a stand alone, plugged directly from my guitar. I'd just like to know whether each of the four topologies will show what operating class that particular one is by lighting up the corresponding operating class light (A/B or A) when you flip from I through IV. I'm trying to determine if there is something wrong with my DT50 as I just bought it used.

Thanks.

yes, when you change topology, you are actually changing the loaded amp model and the class and pentode/triode settings will switch and light up to what is loaded.  I strongly suggest you download the manual, reflash the firmware, and get DT Edit to see what is going on inside your DT.  Then you can choose what amp/cab models you want at each topology position in each channel.

My dt50 2x12 switches operating class when I switch to topology 3 . Reinstall firmware possibly . Could have been changed by accident if you have updated to 2.0 . But unlikely.

yeah but he bought it used.  who knows what the previous owner has loaded now...

Yeah, if you update the firmware, you then have the option to choose from all of the HD amp models; you still have just the # of slots that the DT offers; so you have to choose. But you also get the choose your reverbs too.

You need a MIDI interface to update the firmware; it's not the standard USB -> Line6 Monkey move.

Free v2.0 Firmware Update

Available as a free download, v2.0 firmware takes your DT amp from four voicings to total flexibility. Create never-before-heard amp tones by pairing any of 30 HD preamps with any combination of dynamic topologies within Reinhold Bogner’s reconfigurable tube power amp.

The dynamic topologies include four negative feedback loop options (tight, loose, zero and resonant), operating class (A/AB), power tube configuration (pentode/triode), 12AX7* (normal/boost), B+ voltage* (phase inverter high/low) and feedback capacitor* (cap X/Y).

You can also configure each voicing with your choice of 12 reverbs, complete with per-channel spillover—and more.

*DT50 only.

Thanks a bunch everyone. Your help is greatly appreciated. Can I put the amp back to its factory settings by updating the firmware or is that a different procedure? I'll eventually be hooking up my POD HD500X to the amp but would like to see the amp with the original factory topologies it came with before doing anything.

yep, reflash gets it back to factory and gets you the latest updates.  Use the monkey.

TBone ... once you get your head around this amp and find the tones you like, I think you will find it very satisfying. The 2.0 Firmware upgrade is a big deal and will provide a lot of benefits for the stand alone user especially for the ability to have 8 preamps (of your choice) resident instead of only 4. Plus the DT50 is a monster for volume. It does take a little work (and patience) to tame this beast.

Let us know how you make out and how you like your amp once you bond with it more.

Thanks Geppert. Appreciate the positive feedback. I must say I had some doubts at first about purchasing this amp after reading some negative comments (and sour grapes) but after looking at other options this amp still made the most sense and I do have faith in Line 6 gear. There's a big learning curve ahead of me but I think good things will come about eventually. In this day and age, unless you are independently wealthy and can afford to buy different amps for different sounds this amp makes the most sense, and to be honest, they've gotten so much better than I don't think you could tell the difference in a blind test.

Cheers!

I actually did an A/B test with a Marshall Plexi recently against my DT50 in P75 and Brit 800 modes and I can tell you the difference was negligible and the whole time I was thinking how lucky I was to have the integration of my Pod HD400 to add in pedals/effects or dial in a completely different tone altogether in just one tap of another preset.

I've had some great gear over the years and this rig absolutely holds a candle to ANY of them.

Bought my midi cables and successfully updated the firmware to V2.0 using my Pre-Sonus audio interface and Line 6 Monkey software. Worked like a charm. I kept the amp in standby mode while performing the update but read that you can put the amp in safe mode if the update doesn't take. Where can I find out more information about the new firmware and what new features there are?
