Boston Tone for HD500X

Just received a HD500X and L3T.  Haven't found a good Boston patch yet (i.e. Foreplay/Longtime-Don't Look Back).  Also looking for some good Rush tones.  Having patches is certainly helping me to figure this thing out

Rig sounds great so far but a lot to learn.  Have found some other really nice tone patches that are getting me going.

Also, am thinking of adding HD series amps with a JTV to the just purchased L3T and 500X.  Hoping for a great blend of electric/acoustic sound and ease of connectivity/communication between amps/guitars and effects.

Gotta say the StageSource is amazing.    And the POD is a lot to learn but really cool.

Did you ever find a good Boston patch? I just got one of these from a friend and would love to hear how it sounds...

I made one that I can get by with.  Tried others in Customtone last night using "Boston" for the search parameter.  Don't know which patch you are referring to.  The Boston tones I found are decent but not much different from the one I made.  If you play a Variax, using different Gibson models can change the sound quite a bit.

Would love to hear the patch you are referring to.  Please share it.

I think the staple of the tone is Dimarzio Super Distortion pickup and they used an attenuator on fully cranked Marshalls. I think Tom Schultz had another trick or two up his sleeve as well. A sustaniac guitar will get you some of those overtones I think. I just got the JTV59S and looking at one a few months down the road.

59S,... or 59P?

Tom Schultz from the band Boston,... from what I recall, he had overlapping delays in his bag of tricks.

From what I saw in an interview back in the day, they looked like custom boxes like you get from Stew-Mac.

DiMarzio Super Distortion,.... popular choice back then. Have one on one of my guitars, a custom re-build.

My bad, typo... 69S and I am very happy with that bad boy. If I had known how well it worked with the HD 500X and the DT 50 (head on SA 4x12) I would have gotten it a long time ago. But I just had to have that DZP Strettavera and that Dean ML From Hell that I just blew this thing off.. I'm considering a JTV 89F but dude, I think I really want a sustaniac guitar! A nice hint to Line 6 on the HD pick up Models, SUSTAINIAC!

He did use echo but at the time I think they only had the tape echo's. Maybe he used more than 1? Its also around the time they accidentally pinched the tape echo and inadvertently invented the chorus effect. I'm thinking that may have been Alan Parsons that stumbled on that one though.

" I'm thinking that may have been Alan Parsons that stumbled on that one though. "--- Sort of. There was a guy at EMI Hayes

(Abbey Road Studios and EMI Hayes are part of EMI back then) who came up with stuff. The Beatles would go to him with gadget

ideas and he would have something for them within 48-hours. Him and Mr Parsons' working in the Pink Floyd and post Beatles and

Abbey Road Studios days for him, is what did it for Mr Parsons. He always was into innovative audio even back then. Have had

interesting brief chats with him about his Abbey Road days and his techniques. Interesting fellow.

Oh and, Tom Scholz used a tricked out gold top Les Paul with soap bar pick-ups.

A gadget nut back then.

Many don't realize just how much that guy has done for guitarist and the like for many years! I would liken his contributions to that of Thomas Dolby, Glyn and Andy Johns (related?) and Alan Parsons.

No. But if I have some tenuous tie to him, then so do you by extension,... one degree of separation.

I could name drop some more, but that would truly be rubbing it in. I wouldn't want to do that to you guys.

BTW,... you all have one degree of separation between you and the 60's rock band Iron Butterfly. I used to

crew for them in the mid to late 1970's.

I d/l all the customtone "boston" patches.  None of them are close.  If you search youtube for players trying to imitate The Sound, there are a few.  One of them, Tony Fuentes, got very close.  He describes his setup but I can't understand everything he says so I didn't get the name of it.  But he goes through each effect and the settings on each.  I think the vital piece, after distortion, is the wacky eq's.  I think he said crank the low mid 500 hz and crank the high mid 500 hz, which obviously doesn't make sense.  Another vid says they (Tom and Brad) would open a wah wah pedal toe down and leave it there.  His/their tone sounds like a toy to me, but reeeeeally good with all the other instruments together.  There's another guy on youtube that basically plays a vast assortment of choice guitars through his 500x, and tries to sell you his patches through his youtube vids.  Honestly every patch doesn't sound that much different from the others but he plays an ac/dc song on his ac/dc patch on his ac/dc guitar, then a steve vai song on his vai patch on his Ibanez steve vai model, you get the picture.  This guy did OK on his Helix: line6YoutubeLink.jpg.563541a62d6fa6467ac7f6e4dca036a9.jpgAnyways there is not a decent patch out there for 500x Boston tone.  I'm going to start from scratch on my 500x, I'll post it to customtone if I get close.
