Getting dream rig quick set up help

Recommended Posts

Hi I purchased the JTV59 last week and was so impressed with the tones and especially the ability to use various open tuning's for slide etc that I have ordered a DT25 Head and 500X  they have not arrived yet and I am on 13 hour night shift right through Christmas so when it does arrive in the next few days I will have about a day to set up before a gig. So now for the  question just use preamps from the Pod hooking it up to the DT via XLR ? I won't be needing any fancy patches just good tones as I play mainly Blues and classic rock so if I havde 2 to 3 patches between BB King and Gary Moore and one for in between to start me or should I just take the amp at first one channel crunchy and the other with a bit more dirt?

Basically, yes. Line6Link from the HD500x to the DT25 - you already have a cabinet or you have one on order? The Line6Link cable *can* technically be a standard XLR, but should be an AES/EBU digital cable. Don't sweat that for now. You will also want to buy a Variax cable with the XLR style shielding on both ends. In the long run, get a nicer cable - I like what BestTronics made for me; but I also have the Line6 brand cable - and on short notice, you can probably find one of those in stock in a Guitar Center or do a quick ship from Sweetwater or something.

Yes to your question about using the 'PRE' version of the amp models, when using the l6link to the DT. I have had good results from the XLR DI out from my DT25 combo; you might be able to make that work. Remember - the XLR DI out from the DT25 is MIC LEVEL not line level. So your soundguy will thank you to know that.

Also make sure you set your inputs up on a global level; typically set input 1 to variax, and set input 2 to guitar or aux, or some other non-used channel.

Start with some blank patches, and audition a couple of the amp models; that's the core of your tone, and because the DT will be doing analog switching and power amp recconfiguration every time you change the amp model, make yourself aware that the smaller sized amp models are not nearly as loud as the bigger sized amp models. The treadplate is like, four to eight times louder than the Fender models, or Vox, etc. Watch out for that if you are spinning through the amp models.

I like the plexi normal and bright models with various levels of gain, for that modern / saturated blues tone - you mentioned Gary Moore. The Fender models are all solid, and sound pretty authentic.

Think about your patches like this: there are 8 footswitches on the HD500x. You have two options of how to configure them-

4 patch changes + 4 fx changes, or 8 fx changes. In the first configuration, the bottom row (closest to your feet) trigger patch changes A-B-C-D. The top row control whichever combination of FS assignments. You can turn on/off multiple FX with one footswitch if you program it that way.

On the programming note, make yourself familiar with both the software editor for ease of use AND editing on the HD500 itself, for on-stage / gig tweaks. You will be thankful you know how to re-assign FS settings or adjust certain parameters, save to the patch, etc.

The customtone website has a lot of patches, you might have some luck with those, though you have limited time, so I would suggest learning how to at least build and edit your own patches first, so that if you do end up using other peoples tones, you can reverse engineer them, and know how to quickly edit to your own taste.

I use the 4 patch + 4 fx FS setup. I usually create four tones that can be used with each other, and set the FX up in a similar manner in each. Typically, comp / boost / drive / eq in the pre-amp model slot, and chorus / delay / reverb in the post amp model slot.

Thank you for your kind reply Colonel Forbin this will help me set up quickly as I come off duty on boxing day at 7 in the morning and will probably sleep until 1 and I play on the 27th . I do have a few good quality XLR cables I can use and the only other kind I will be able to buy locally is DMX Cable and I am not sure how different these are to XLR or AES/EBU. I am a bit far away for the links you posted as I live in the Highlands of Scotland about 3650 miles from Chicago as the crow flies but a tour of some Chicago blues clubs is on my bucket list.

I do have a cab it started out in life as a Fender Blues Deluxe combo but after the amp gave up the ghost for a second time I removed it and kept the remains as a cab I have put a vintage Taydon speaker in there which is rated at 50 watts RMS 8 ohm so should be ok if it does not sound good I might stick a Celestian G 12 H in it or part with money and get a line 6 cab.

Thanks for the tips on global settings if I can get the 500x working I would be happy with 4 patches with 4 controllers on each patch I take it you can have more EFX than 4 but can assign 4 controllers to any of the EFX you want to turn off/on.

I did not know about the output on the the DT25 being at mike level I have a recording set up when I get time I will have a play about with it and see how the pod sounds direct in with cab emulation should be a versatile set up.

Thanks again for your excelent hints and tips

Well my toys have arrived and I managed to have a quick play on the DT25 hooked it up to my cab and I can see what you mean about the levels between amps. At first I thought the amp was not working when trying out the Fender amp then found out you need the gain up nearly 3/4 way and the chanel volume up a bit too but it does sound very nice. I tried the other 3 amps and was quite impressed. I only had an hour before I had to go to work so only had a chance to take the PODxt out of the box so have not played with it yet but have taken the pilots handbook for both into work so I can have a read but I might get in an hour on this tomorrow just  to see if it is working if nothing else.

Thanks,

Bob
