What´s the difference?

Recommended Posts

I am thinking that some time in the future I´ll by a JTV Variax. I have the old Variax and played it so much that I had to get all the frets changed. My impression is that the JTV have better sounding acoustic models, but I cannot tell for sure when all I have is youtube clips.
When I look at prices I see a range from roughly 900 € to 3000 €. I don´t see any info on what these top models have that the cheaper doesn´t have.

Hey there.

The JTV has twice the processing power as its predecessor, which gives the ability to change between tunings and use virtual capo for even more tuning options on the fly. With the acoustics, we also now have the ability to use the tone knob for mic placement, to find that "sweet spot".

Since JTV is the latest, that means the latest firmware and hardware giving us the latest and greatest in modeling technology.

As for the JTV's at the 900 price is for our standard JTV model. Whereas the 3000 priced JTV's are the US versions that are built to order. The only difference between the two is that the 3000 is made when you order it in the US, and takes about 3 months to build.

Actually the US models have different componets such as tuners and different finishes are available with different wood types when you order also..  I am not sure about the pickups I think they are the same, They may be able to custom install different mag pick ups..

You know, I'll take assumptions too...such as: with the Tone knob at 1, the mic is placed further from the soundhole; and with the Tone knob at 10 it is placed closer, thus allowing more bass to be amplified....etc, etc....

thanks!
The v1.82 firmware update fixes issues related to alternate tuning the new acoustic models in Workbench. It also addresses the community's feedback regarding the natural ambience of the new acoustic models by adding a range at the top of the tone knob that reduces the body ambience and offers a sound that is similar to mic'ing an acoustic guitar at the 12th fret.

For acoustic models, the Volume control acts as a simple level control.
Since acoustic guitars don’t have tone controls, we decided to let you shape the
tone of these models by changing the position of a modeled microphone
using the Tone knob.
Give it a spin to explore a varying range of tonal flavor for each model

Curious, the pickups are the same, there aren't extra models, there aren't exotic wood options, the bridge is the same, the necks are the same....$2100 extra dollars for a wider color selection and possibly some different tuners? That seems a bit of an overreach to me. I just paid a good chunk of change on a Fender Strat. But it has A bunch of extras and exclusives that you can't get on any of their other American made products and far more that what you would find on Mexican or other Asian made products.

To me a $3K+ guitar should have some exclusives that are not offered on the Korean made sibling well above and beyond some extra color selections. Else, why pay that?

Amen, brother...

There's really nothing "custom" about the US models, imho (or most other production guitars out there which have been anointed with "custom" status). You're not really "choosing" anything but the color, here. The specs are what they are, take it or leave it. There's only the promise that the guitar is nicer than it's less expensive brethren with the exact same specs.

For that kind of money, you can commission a truly custom axe, where you're picking the woods, nut width, neck profile and radius, fretwire, all the hardware, etc. etc.

A good part of what you are paying for with the US JTVs is the build quality. The Korean JTVs are similar to the PRS SE series, whereas the US JTVs are closer to a real PRS.

My Korean JTV59 is nowhere near the build quality of my Japanese Variax 700, or my USA Strat Deluxe.

I have a JTV69US, and overall I feel like it feels and plays like an expensive instrument. I don't regret paying what I paid for it. It was set up perfectly out of the box, and it's the nicest playing guitar I own at the current time. I have a US Deluxe Strat and a US Strat Plus, and really, the JTV is pretty far beyond them in fit and finish. I was also able to get a 69 with a quarter sawn maple neck - I couldn't have gotten that with a Korean version.
