L2T with POD HD500

Recommended Posts

I have a HD500 that is two years old.  I have the DT50.  I just purchased a L2T to eliminate hauling the massively heavy DT50 around for jamming.  I coonected the L6Link from the HD500 to the L6Link input on the back of the L2T.  Questions:

1) Does the HD500 work with the L2T just as the HD500X does?

2) Do I need to set the mode to electric guitar?

3) Are there other configuration/setup changes I need to make?

Thanks,

Pete

1) Yes

2) No. You can experiment with different settings. The HD500/x store the speaker preset mode as part of a preset. The default value in all factory presets seems to be Electric Guitar. If. You want to change that stored setting, manually change the speaker mode and then SAVE the preset.

3) For best results (IMHO) set the speaker mode to PA/Reference, set the HD500 Output Mode to Studio, and use the full (not pre) amp models with your desired mic/cab combination.

I'm in the exact same position as you.  In the process of changing over from DT50 to direct.  I still use DT50 in one band and direct in another.

Ditto to the post above.  You "may" find that you like the L2 in guitar mode but I use Ref/PA because I actually run to the board and then back to my L2M.

Prepare for a tweakfest.

I also found that it sounded best to me with the the L2 set to P.A./Reference and the POD set to studio Direct. Keep in mind if you use any of the other output modes on the POD you will bypass the power amp, cab, and mic modelling on the POD.

I also found that if you use the link cable that the POD will set it self to Combo/Stack mode and you will need to manually change it back to studio/direct every time you power up the unit connected to the L2.

Thats odd...are you using the 500 or 500X? My 500X doesn't reset the output mode and it is connected to the L2T via L6 link. I had a ton of presets set up for use with headphones that were all using studio/direct. I used those as a staring point for knobulating with the L2T, and those patches all kept that setting right where it was...

I have the older HD500 not the newer HD500X. I haven't found any way for the Studio/Direct mode to stick. As soon as the HD500 sees the L2m speaker on the Link connection the POD switches to Combo/Stack.

Cruisinon2, Are you using the Line 6 link digital connection between the POD and the L2? It won't switch if you are using one of the other outputs.

Yup, L6 Link...weird.

I will have to check my firmware version to see if I am up to the current level.

I don't think the problem is with the L2 setting, its the POD's output setting that automatically switches when using L6 link.  I only have the DT25 not the L2, but it's the same thing.  The moment the DT turns on with L6 connected the POD switches from Studio Direct to Stack Power and my stereo outs to the board sound like garbage.  It is not switchable once L6 link is in use.

Someone earlier seemed to indicate that the 500X can switch even when using L6 link but I would really like to see that confirmed.  If true, then why not the 500?  No difference in the firmware...

I believe that L6 Link detects whether the Pod HD is connected to a DT amp or a Stagesource speaker and reacts accordingly. Connected to a DT it configures to Live output mode (Stack Power) but with a Stagesource it retains its current output mode, presuming the user will match output mode to speaker mode using the stored speaker mode value in the preset. Or perhaps the Pod HD, which stores the speaker mode as part of its preset, uses that info to configure its output mode matching PA/Reference with Studio mode and Electric Guitar with a Live mode.

At least that's been my observation - my Pod HD (both HD500 and Pro) is sometimes connected directly to an L3t speaker via L6 Link and I haven't noticed any change in the Pod HD output mode. It remains Studio/Direct and I configure my presets to set the speaker to PA/Reference.

In any case, I think firmware v 2.1 is required for predictable results using L6 Link and a Stagesource speaker.

Same here...output mode doesn't change on it's own on mine, or I would have been complaining about it. That would drive me nuts. I don't see how that would be a desireable "feature", especially live. It takes a significant amount of time to dial in the tones the way I want them, and there is no "right" or "wrong" way to configure these units.

To then have the software assume that it knows the "best" way to configure itself based on which connections are in use is rather stupid, imho. What did I do all the tweaking for if it's just gonna be undone for me? If I had to go in and manually re-set the output mode of every patch I'm gonna use at a gig every time I power up, all this stuff would be going on eBay.

What happens when you try to use both a DT and an L2?  How does the POD configure itself?

Not sure, but I know Line 6 prescribes that when using both DT and Stagesource, the Stagesource speaker must be connected last in the L6 Link chain. In other words, the Pod HD is connected directly to the DT amp and I believe that pairing determines things.

Here's a snip from the HD500 Advanced Guide:

*Note: It is necessary to always place the StageSource speaker(s) last in the L6 LINK signal chain (e.g. - POD HD500 > DT50 > StageSource L3). For more about using the L6 LINK connection, DT Series amps & StageSource speakers, please see the additional documentation available at http://line6.com/support/manuals/.

I still need to check the firmware version on my HD500.

Currently I can have my HD500 configured for Studio/Direct. I can power the HD500 down and back up and the Studio/Direct mode is preserved. As soon as the L2m is connected via the L6 link and the speaker is powered on you can see the output mode on the HD500 switch to Combo/Stack.

I will see if my unit needs a firmware upgrade and report back on my results.

I checked my Hd500 and it is running version 2.10. I wonder now if there has been some changes in the way the L2m behaves? It does appear that the L2m is forcing the HD500 into Combo/Stack when it connected via the L6 Link.

This is annoying as I have to remember to switch this back to studio/direct at every gig and rehearsal.

That's strange...and would be wildly unacceptable to me. What's the point of hitting "save"? It's just gonna undo it for you anyway. Either one of the units is malfunctioning, or there's a setting buried somewhere that we don't know about which triggers that behavior.

I believe I found the answer to my problem.

I was just reading release notes on the various firmware versions and found that version 2.20 fixes the problem with the L2 setting the POD to combo/Stack.

Time to update my HD500!
