Jtv59 Toggle Switch- Assign Different Guitars?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I use the JTV59 with a PODHD500 in my live shows. I've got my electric sounds going to my amp and the acoustics going to the PA.What I'm wondering is, if you just use the Variax as a normal guitar, the pickup selector switch works like it should on a Les Paul.

If you're using it as a Variax, if you flip it while playing, all the sudden, you're on something else.

What I'd like to do is set it up for my Variax patches so that when it flips, it's not such a drastic change of instrument. On some of them, I'll be on something like a Ric 12 string sound, but if I ht the selector switch, all the sudden a sitar, or acoustic guitar or something else is coming out.

What I'd like to know, is there any way that I can make it so the selector switch picks a "like" guitar?

For example, if I'm using "Chime 2" in the center position, can I actually program the up and down positions of the selector switch to say Chine 1 and Chime 3? Just an example.

I'm not sure where to do this. In my HD500, I've got all my alternate tunings and variax models stored, so at the tap of a foot switch, I'm playing, say, a 12 string acoustic with Drop D tuning. Tap another switch and I'm playing a 6 string electric in G tuning.

SO I'd think I'd be able to set it up in the HD500, but I'm not finding that. That makes me think it's in the Variax workbench where I'd do it.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks

No - you can't do this effectively. The Variax model stored in an HD500 preset is used (when VDI connected) to set the Variax to the specified model, regardless of the current status of the Variax Model Selector knob and Pickup Selector switch. As soon as you physically move the knob/switch, you override the stored preset selection and the Variax model changes to reflect the current status of the knob/switch. There is no concept of a 'like' guitar.

I suggest you abandon the idea of using both HD500 presets and the Variax itself to simultaneously control your Variax settings. You can use the HD500 and its stored presets, or you can use the Variax controls manually. You can choose one or the other at different times during your gig. As you say, you can set up your HD500 patches so that you always use them to control the Variax setting. Or you can not store Variax settings in the preset and set the Variax manually when you like. But you can't avoid the potentially harsh contrast if you use an HD500 preset to specify a model that does not correspond to the physical settings of the guitar, and then manually change the physical setting. If you do this mid-song you are inviting trouble.

Workbench is just another way of using the Variax in conjunction with either HD500 preset control or manual control; it doesn't really affect or alter the above situation. In your Chime example, you could do what you want without using Workbench - you just have to make sure your Model Selector knob was set to the Chime Model Bank before selecting the HD500 preset that selects Chime 2. But unless your physical Variax Model Selector setting corresponds to the HD500 preset's Model Bank selection you are in trouble when you change the pickup selector switch because that will automatically change the Variax model to the currently selected Model Selector position also.
