mwynalda41
I was in the same boat and picked up a pair of M-Audio BX5 monitors. They sound great. Not quite as loud as I would have expected but plenty loud for my purposes. Sound quality is excellent. I had planned to get the M-Audio AV-40 monitors but got a really good sale on the BX5s
cclement
Well.. what kind of budget do you have? That's going to determine what you can get. The M-Audio AV-40 are just OK. I have a friend who has them for his media center/TV. Just OK. I have the M-Audio BX8a monitors (the big brother to the BX5s) and have been really happy with them. Expect to pay about $500 for the pair. The JBL LSR 305 ($150/ea) and the LSR308 ($250/ea) are - from everything I've read - VERY good. They have a new tweeter design that is good out to 24kHz and it a trickle down from their M2 master reference monitors. The PreSonus Eris series looks promising (about the same price-point at the JBLs) but I haven't heard them yet to know.
bjnette
If you intend to record and mix down on them the enrty level monitors will lack the midrange detail of better quality ones with flatter responses and faster amp slew rate. If you can get the most bang for your buck models. Genelics and a bunch of others. There are heaps of manufacturers and most have enrty level lines as well as mid level monitors. If you just want to hear the HD 500 there are plenty of entry level models. As for feedback, you can get some interaction if they are loud enough and your pickups are well potted and not microphonic. The feed back your probably wishing to hear would be the ever so slight microphonics produced when a valve amp feeds back on itself generating additional harmonic content as it reclips the signal. Try out various patches to see if you get what your after.

I had planned to get the M-Audio AV-40 monitors but got a really good sale on the BX5s +1 to the M-Audio BX5! I have a pair of those at home. Got them on sale at Guitar Center, they were pretty inexpensive. Nice low end, they are plenty loud for home, doing some recording or playback. Nothing fancy, less $$ than KRK, maybe not in the league with more expensive 'home' 5" monitors (Yamaha HS5?) But I also run the output from the TV to those speakers, they crank. Watch movies and get those rockin.
