Looking 4 the Best Practice Amp (portable) for my FX100.

Greetings Amplifi Gurus!

I am looking for the best solution with a portable amp that would allow me to stream music through my FX100 with the capability to jam x-small venues with.  I would be using the Left Main Out to accomplish this.  I have a Solid State budget but would consider a tube under $300.

Let me know what has work for you...

Thank you in advanced...

Kevin

You might look into an Active PA Loud Speaker(s), which will give you a nice flat response which works well with the FX100.

I do not have any specific recommendations.

Here is a quick category search from Sweetwater.

Line6 also has their Stage Source line, but I think it starts at ~ $700.

Hey There,

While I don't have an FX100 - I've been running an HD500 (and Zoom G5) through a Tech 21 Power Engine 60. Its been pretty sweet and gets LOUD plus you can run its XLR out to a board if you need too. 33 lbs too **woot**. Used YMMV but $2-300 should score one.

I use a fender mustang iii v2 should be about your price point they cost about £200 here in the UK, I've used a hd500 and a zoom g5 into the fx return of the amp on a regular basis, it sounds great at low volume and gets really loud if you ever need it, it has an mp3 input for jamming (not sure if you need that or your fx100 has you covered?) but also it has amp models and fx built in, I programmed some basic clean/crunch/solo tones so that should my floor modeller ever fail me I can still complete the rehearsal or gig, it's a great amp for the price and has a nicer look than a powered cab or monitor.

I had an alto 12" powered cab before getting the fender but I found the high frequencies were very shrill and not warm amp sounding at all, I'm sure you could eq your patches to your liking but I like that I can program on headphones and then when I play it through the fender it sounds pretty much the same as long as I turn the cab simply off

I use a Roland Cube (CM30) Ultra portable, stereo and sounds great! I played out last weekend with the FX100. I'd only had it a day...Mono direct into the PA. Did surprisingly well. Spent this week with the Cube in stereo. Vast improvement. My $.02

I totally agree with Triryche about using Power Speakers/PA with the FX100.

Powered Speakers have no ability to "color" the sound like amplifiers do.  Think of this way, you know how awesome the FX100 sounds when using it with just headphones?  Well that's what your audience will think when they hear you play the FX100 through powered speakers.  The better the speakers the better the sound.

You can't go wrong.  Then if you want to sing and play, you're already there.  Just plug your mic into the speakers.  Yes you'll want a mixer too.  But that will be a great rig!

Good luck.

I have tried my FX100 through the preamp of numerous amps and PA type devices including a Hot Rod Deluxe, a Kustom Profile One, a Roland PM-30, Mackie Thump 12, Crate FXT120, Fender Ultimate Chorus stereo 2x12, Acoustasonic Jr stereo 2x8, and into the front of Fender Twin, and Blues Jr.

No doubt, a good stereo PA is going to sound the best - but PA's are large and expensive for a good one!  I 'imagine' the L2 (or a pair of those) is going to yield the best possible sound... but that's $1600 new.  On a budget, I think you get the most bang for the buck using a guitar amp with a send/return; plugging in to the return and bypassing the preamp of the amp itself.  Even if an amp doesn't have an actual effects loop, many amps have a CD in or AUX in - which also bypasses the preamp and provides a great way to use the FX100 (or any POD).  If the amp is stereo, you can hook both the left and right outputs of the FX100 to enjoy stereo effects.  Get the most watts you can afford within a given amp genre (tube or SS) as most amps get a good deal of their volume from the pre amp section.  To get the most detail out of the amp models you need alot of overhead; 100 + watts for  SS, and 30 + watts for tube.  If you like tube amps, the Hot Rod Deluxe can often be found for $300 - $400.  This amp has a two inputs and a send/return jacks.  Plug into the front and turn off the amp and cab models.  Plug into the return and enable an amp model - turning the cab on or off as desired.  Of course, the Fender power amp and cabinet colors the sound - but in a good way IMO.  You also just bought yourself a great tube amp that sounds amazing on its own!  You can get even more bang for your buck - and flatter response - from a solid state 2x10 or 2x12 combo.  A Line 6 Spider III (or better) 120, or 150 makes an excellent platform for the FX100 - plug into the aux input. Remember, these amps were designed to 'model' amps so they have a nice flat response; the speakers and cabinets were designed to color the sound as little as possible.  Spider III 120 and 150's can be had for about $200.

Full range speakers is thee key. I use a Roland Stage PA. It's funny, for so many years L6 has talked about putting PODs etc through guitar amps ... Recently they talk more about using a PA or powered speaker. Forget about guitar amps....
