Guitar is distorted when recording

My guitar sounds fine going into Ableton live 9 via USB through my headphones. However on playback it is distorted. I can see where the signal seems to be blowing it out, but no matter what i try it seems to do it. I turn my send down, i have the pod set to studio mode, i turn the volume down on the pod itself via the volume nob and no good. Ideas? This is driving me nuts.

On a side note i was using a Focusrite USB hub and i had no issue with it what so ever.

And yes i have read through the USB troubleshooting guide. And i have messed with buffer sizes etc. in Ableton

Basically what it looks like is the signal is going in super hot no matter what i adjust. There has to be an option or something i am missing.

Sounds like the sound card setting is boosted +18 db in the Line 6 Audio and MIDI settings. Check that out.

That's too funny Phil. lol.

Also, while your recording in Ableton you can see the waverform, is it's too fat for the window your likely clipping it. The signal indicators to the right will also indicate clipping by turning red.

"H" has a good point too.

The +18db is not checked. The wave form can be big or small depending on the level i set for the record send. But no matter it still looks maxed out.

Is this the first time you've run into this? Have you had better results results recording with another program or is this the very first time you've recorded. It's possible something is wrong that can't be fixed with software settings. Maybe you should call Line 6 or do a support ticket.

Also what does your set up consist of? What computer and OS. etc.

This is the first time i have setup the Pod HD500x as my interface. I was using a Focusrite usb interface before with no issue. I have just recently purchased the pod. I am not new to recording but i have been away for a while. I am also a support engineer so i have done a good bit of troubleshooting on this. I did open a support ticket but it could take days. I am just looking for ideas if anyone has anything.

Win 8.1, just reformatted and all drivers updated. I updated all the drivers through Monkey as well. Not sure if i did the firmware or not, but i think it was up to date already. I need to verify that when i get home tonight.

- Most likely because you are hardware monitoring, in other words hearing the POD output before it goes into the DAW, not the DAW recorded signal output.

I can see where the signal seems to be blowing it out, but no matter what i try it seems to do it. I turn my send down, i have the pod set to studio mode, i turn the volume down on the pod itself via the volume nob and no good. Ideas? This is driving me nuts.

- As previously noted, the POD Master does not control the USB signal, use the POD Mixer levels or Channel Volume to lower the signal through the USB.  What SEND are you turning down?  Isn't the POD direct into the computer?

On a side note i was using a Focusrite USB hub and i had no issue with it what so ever.

- probably because you were controlling the signal strength with the Focusrite to avoid the clipping indicator...

And yes i have read through the USB troubleshooting guide. And i have messed with buffer sizes etc. in Ableton

- Those things only control latency not signal strength

Basically what it looks like is the signal is going in super hot no matter what i adjust. There has to be an option or something i am missing.

- Is there an Input signal level control in Ableton?  Probably your best bet is to lower the signal strength with the POD mixer or Channel Volume.

Gotchya!! It's good to know these things, lol. Best Wishes on the fix.

To adjust the signal i go into the driver through ableton and lower it there. But i have a feeling that is not actually lowering the signal strength just the volume somehow. I guess i need to start looking at ableton maybe being the issue?

What mixer levels are you referring to to lower the signal through USB?

go into the POD mixer levels and lower the signal there.  You can do it on the POD or I prefer to use HD Edit software.  Ableton is NOT the issue, its a great piece of software.

That longer post was good one Rad, I think I learned something too, lol.

And channel volume of the amp, don't forget that, it will directly affect the signal strength pump down the USB.

If monitoring gets too quite, turn up the Master.

I've found that the volumes in general are very crucial to getting a good tone. Even just putting a volume pedal after the amp and mixer and then just adjusting that has a good effect, but the Amp volume, Mixer volume seem most important. Of course there's more to it than that but in all the volumes are a crucial adjustment.

Follow the mixer advice.

Generally go for the hottest signal you can get before the audio hits any peaks. = 0.0 db.

If you go over, it'l sound digitally clipped on playback.

Channel tools in your DAW will help get the best level.

You want a large metering plugin.

There are several that are free.

You might also be able to change the scale of the small ones in Live. NO RED at all.
