POD HD Desktop > POD Farm?

I have POD Farm but it's garbage. In particular the clean amp models don't respond very well to my playing and i prefer to record with a Marshall MG15CF lol..

I'm considering purchasing the HD Desktop for recording and just as a portable amp that i could use headphones with if i need. Demos of the HD Desktop sound good but since i can't play through it myself i cannot tell if it responds to a guitar like a normal amplifier would (if that makes sense).

Can anyone give me a few details about how it sounds. Would it be just like playing through a Spider amp except with better quality tones, if you get what i mean?

Reamping with the HD500 series is a bit tricky. You can use the SPD/IF output to get a clean guitar into one track and the HD500 modeled sound in another. But if you need to reamp for some reason, you have to use POD Farm or route the dry track back through the HD500. I'd use S-Gear or Bias instead if all you want is something on the computer.

I have the HD Desktop....It's my main pre amp all the time....I generally use the power amp in on just about any tube amp....I have an SV MK1, SV MK2, DT50 and DT25....Since the HD came around, that's the modeling preamp I use....I can also use it with headphones or direct to a PA (FRFR Monitors)...Best bean ever IMHO...dynamics are the big improvement in HD over the previous generation....If you have issues with dynamics in your pooter, it could be your interface....the interface (ADC) is everything when capturing a dry guitar from analog (passive guitars)...If it's a 9VDC active PUP system, then you only have 10v peak to peak at the max anyway. The dynamic range of most passive guitars can be quite a bit higher than that....

HD Desktop is pretty decent for catching the dry with the SPDIF...

I suppose i never considered the reamping thing. If the tones on the HD Desktop are good enough then i suppose i wouldn't need to reamp anyway. I use a Focusrite 2i4 now but i did originally use a POD UX2 which didn't make my plugins any different. My amp sims just don't translate my guitar's sound properly, especially split coil positions. It almost sounds like my guitar has rubber strings, if that makes any sense? Like the detail of the steel strings just don't translate into POD Farm very well and a lot of the acoustic sort of detail is lost, so it sounds very bland.

It's not so bad for distorted tones but i can't handle the clean tones at all, they just aren't working for me. Is the POD HD Desktop any better? I plan to use the "direct monitoring" feature on the 2i4 so i just monitor the tone from the POD straight to my monitors so there is no latency.

I think the clean to light crunch is where HD is really excelling...With the XT type modeling, the only way I could ever get anything to work as to put a tube buffer in the signal path...and even then it was just starting to "feel" better...Never could use the XT stuff direct for cleans or light crunch...heavier stuff was ok...but I always ended up using putting a tube in the path...I never used POD Farm (XT bean and Flextone III XL), but my understanding is that the Farm is XT generation modeling so what you are saying seems very consistent with my feelings on the XT type modeling I have...I had to use outboard gear to get XT modeling good enough for me...tube power amp with a mic on a cab and some outboard FX since XT chains were fixed...With an HD Bean I can record direct and the cleans 10 times better IMO...The dynamics were the thing that blew me away the first time I used it in headphones...I don't need the outboard gear anymore....I can do the chain however I need...Made my life a little simpler...
