Jtv-89's On Sale At Sweetwater For $699

Put that price on the '59, and I'd bite.

Ha, yeah, I imagine those would sell pretty quickly! I wouldn't be holding my breath on that happening, though. My bet is that the 89 simply isn't selling nearly as well now that the 89F is available.

But $700 for the 89 is a crazy-good price, imo. If someone likes the body style, I would think it would be hard to pass it up.

It also shows how much L6 overprices their gear. You know they still aren't losing money either. Like I said in another post, when the electronics fail, and they will, all you have is an overpriced strat/lp-ish prs/schecter copy.

I have to admit, I'm jaded because the saddles on my tremolo-equipped variax had issues with both the model knob and piezo saddles in about 16 months. L6 makes good modelers, but I have 0 faith in their guitars. But there is a caveat. I'd bite on the '59 for $699 too. At least then I could afford another one later when the first fails.

When I called Musiciansfriend to get my price adjustment they said $699 was below their cost, a manager had to approve the price match.

Looking at other posts and judging by what I know to have been true in the past I would bet the dealer cost on the JTV89 is around $850, and I would bet it costs L6 around half of that per guitar all in (R&D, manufacture, advertising, shipping from SE Asia etc.)

If L6 decided to end production of the non trem 89 and blow out the remaining stock they most likely made a deal to reduce the dealer price to L6 cost or thereabouts for Sweetwater on the remaining stock.

So Sweetwater still makes a profit, L6 moves the remaining stock at cost - you are right, L6 is probably are not losing any money on the deal, more likely breaking even on the remaining stock and freeing up resources for something more profitable. Surely no one would have expected them to sell these guitars at cost fromn the beginning? That would not be a great business plan...

True, someday my brand new JTV will die, but til then I will have a really cool tool to use. Hmmm, come to think of it, my old Variax transplants are still working fine, one was made from an original Variax (pre-500 designation) that was made in I believe 2003 and the other was built from a V300 that as I recall was from 2006, so they have already lasted me a pretty long time and if they fail I can easily pick up a used Variax for parts for the foreseeable future - I would bet that in 5-10 years used JTVs to use as parts donors for repair will be fairly cheap as well.

I have to admit, I'm jaded because the saddles on my tremolo-equipped variax had issues with both the model knob and piezo saddles in about 16 months.

Sweetwater gives a free 2 year warranty on the Variax, also a longer warranty can be purchased for an additional charge.

I had problems with the saddles on my Variax 300, changed to a Graphtech Ghost bridge when I did the transplant and have not had a problem since. The model knob problem you had is something pretty rare I think, but that part can easily be replaced here :http://www.fullcompass.com/brand/LN6/Replacement-Service-Parts.html. I think the model knob cannot take a lot of abuse, and sweat and corrosion is what usually kills the piezos.

Thanx for the link! Bought one :)

Would have preferred one of the other shapes, but it will probably live its life in the studio so it really doesnt really matter.

So, anyone know if a VDI cable is included?

I think phil_m hit it on the head -- The 89's are probably not selling so well after the 89F came out. The first thing that folks screamed for after the initial rollout of the JTV's was for a Floyd Rose on the 89. It took L6 about 3 years, but they finally came out with the FR. Really for the market those guitars are shooting at, NOT having a dive-bomb-able trem was not good marketing, and NO trem even worse... I'd bet the sales of 89's is near zero after the 89F came out, even with the price at the JTV-59 level, instead of being the least expensive of the bunch as the 89 is. You can bet the P-90's on the 59P and the SSS configuration of the 69S (I bought my second JTV, the 69S) filled a certain demographic they figured they were missing... I expect to see the 89 discontinued, just replaced by the 89F. Doubt that the 59P or 69S will totally replace the 59 and 69, as no major engineering was really needed to do it compared to major body routing and FR design with piezo's, etc. to make those model variations....

My 2 cents...

I have to say thanks for the link as well.  I have wanted a JTV for a long time but couldn't justify the $1400.00 price tag. I would have preferred the 59 but I couldn't pass up the technology at this price. This guitar reminds me of my Jackson Dinky so I picked one up.

  • 3 weeks later...

I bought one as well. I just happen to see it on Sweetwater's website over the July 4th holiday and the $699 immediately caught my attention. I didn't care for the body style at the time but for the price I could learn to live with it. I was going up to Guitar Center to pickup my strings, strings of the month club, and had to ask them if they would match the price. As I expected they wouldn't meet the price, the manager said it was below their cost. No problem, GC has taken good care of me before so no ill will towards them at all. In fact, I think getting a 2 year warranty from Sweetwater was the better way to go anyway. It arrive 13 days later which I didn't think was bad at all considering I ordered it on the July 4th holiday. The guitar is sweet! Fit and finish are perfect, neck is very fast and the setup is great. I will say that I was a little disappointed that it came with only a gig bag. I knew before I bought it that this was the case and if I had paid full price I would have been very disappointed but again great price, acceptable concessions made. And I'm even starting to like the body style.
