alternative ways to backup podHD?

I've been a pod user since the red-kidney one of the 90s and recently bought the HD500x to replace an ageing XT live floor board.

New to these forums also, as i've never really had issues with previous line 6 devices (which is a good advert!)

On my old XT live floor unit (and the old red pod) i could back up settings with a midi-dump.

Useful as a backup if you're out and about as the keyboard player could dump a sysex file if a recovery was needed.

With the HD500 it appears that any data transfer needs to be done by the PC/mac editor.

Is there any other way to backup/restore pod data, like a midi dump?

thanks all

No other way that I know about. As you say, you need a pc/mac and a previous save of the patches, setlists, and/or bundle.

And if you do a global reset, there's no way to get the system settings back to what they were other than manually.

I'm just curious.  How many times in the past has the keyboard player had to restore your old POD with a midi dump ?

I also have used Line6 gear since the red kidney bean.  I've never had to restore a device.  I have had a device partially fail when it was connected to a bad electrical outlet.  Even then it made it through the gig, just had a bad 60hz hum until I got it fixed.

I fully believe in backups too.  I have 2 PODHDs, 2 amps, 2 cabs, and 3 guitars when I go to a gig.

Joel, it doesn't matter how many times someone has needed to backup/restore. Its the insurance policy of knowing that there is a way to get it done.

You know, like carrying extra guitar strings with you. When was the last time I broke a string -- not just at a gig, but broke one at all -- yet I have them with me at all times.

I don't want to carry a Microsoft computer with me to every gig and every practice and every recording session to make a last minute change to a setlist, or god forbid do a complete reboot.

He didn't ask about editing anything.  He asked about backup and restore.  I'm all for backups but have never had to restore software at a gig.  Only had hardware failures.  Which is why I carry spare hardware.  That's why I was curious.

Valid points, both ways.

yes, its just backup. Like insurance- no body wants to the hassle or expense but the day you need it it will pay back for itself.

Carrying an additional piece of hardware is a wise backup plan too, though i appreciate some people may not warrant the money or the extra weight/space, so it depends on the individual's needs and situation.

thanks for the info, everyone
