longhorns12
Anyone know any good recording software that is free and won't give me a virus?
TheRealZap
reaper... not exactly free forever... but you can get it and use it for free.... forever... but they do have a nag screen requesting that you buy a 50$ish license i think that mixcraft is worth the 75$ it costs... neither is truly free... but i think they are the best options. Triryche
Honestly, that is virtually free considering the power they pack and the price of some of the more expensive DAW's. Well worth the $$ IMHO, especially if you're just starting out. Reaper is currently $60 but comes with 2 major number revisions. So right now it is 4.77 so you would be covered thru 5.99 I haven't used Mixcraft yet, but will be trying it out sometime this year.
TheRealZap
just for anyone else considering it..... i've tried a lot of DAWS on both windows and mac. mixcraft is the closest that one can get on a windows system to garageband on the mac.... and garageband is the easiest to use and simplest DAW i think you will find... made even better by the fact that you can grow into it's larger more robust brother "Logic" (which many of the benefits of logic come with mix craft as well) they give you a 30 day free trial and its worth exploring if you're in the market... the best DAW advice i've ever gotten... is stick with what you know... meaning that the feature set of most modern DAWS are very similar and once you are familiar with one best to get on with the music rather than being distracted by the technology in the various DAWS. i'm an IT guy by profession and go out of my way to be distracted by technology! haha so i may be the exception.... but early on in your search try at least a few and go with the one that fits your workflow best. (my advice)
gary9605
Audacity and its free http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Triryche
Audacity is free, but does not natively support ASIO protocol. You can however compile it to include real ASIO support (not ASIO4ALL). IIRC, VST plug-ins work, but not VSTi, which is likely a deal breaker for many.
TheRealZap
i would have mentioned that... but his only requirement was "good" so i didn't :D Audacity and its free http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
BillBee
I vote for Reaper - full featured DAW and after the learning curve is pretty straight forward. Audacity is OK though IIRC drums VSTs were also lacking (best you look that one up as there may have been an update). -B
Triryche
i would have mentioned that... but his only requirement was "good" so i didn't :D I had a feeling that was coming. Audacity is OK though IIRC drums VSTs were also lacking (best you look that one up as there may have been an update). -B Yep, looks like still no VSTi From their site: VST Plug-InsAudacity can load VST effects (but not VST instruments) on all operating systems.
