Why are we forced to update the amplifi?

Hello people: when my amplifi 75 needed an update it just started to flash four white lights on the ABCD

Preset controls. Ok fair enough, it is saying an update is available. But why is is necessary?

With the four lights flashing nothing works!

Shouldn't one have the choice to update or not? There may be a valid reason not to update at any given time.

Since the latest update my amp has not worked correctly, and needs a factory reset just to boot up and

make it useable.

Why won't it work with an earlier version? I am thinking that earlier versions should work; maybe not with added features and bug fixes, but it should at least turn on an be useable!

I hope some one from Line 6 itself we see this and respond, but a response from anyone would be appreciated.

Thanks to all!

it's always going to be necessary because the app has to match the hardware....

i'm sure some things could change without breaking the two...

and maybe there would just be an app released....

but the 2 things are pretty tightly integrated.

I think something is wrong with your amp.  Are you leaving the usb connected to the amp and your computer all the time?  Or perhaps the last time you did a firmware upgrade something went wrong.

The amp itself has absolutely no idea when an update is available.  Only the iOS/Android app and the PC Update utility do. The amp isn't a networked device and has no direct interface to detect or even install an update.

Furthermore, I've always been given a choice as to whether to update the firmware or not.  I can also choose to install an older version of the firmware just by selecting it with the app.

As you can see here, I'm able to go back to Firmware 2.0.0 quite easily:

i wasnt suggesting it was normal that you be prompted to update all the time... i may have misunderstood...

i do think its normal that if an update exists you could be forced to make that update one time to maintain compatibility with the app.

Thanks for the reply Mr. Zap, I think something must have gone wrong on my last update. This is what I did last time:

1. I deleted and reinstalled the amplifi app as it was acting a bit weird. Newest app version opened and looked fine.

2. Turned on my amp and was prompted for update which I did. All seemed fine. I loaded one preset to bank 1 preset A

And that was fine. ( so now I think I am golden)

Everything worked fine for that session, but when I turned on the amp the next day I was prompted to update again,

I can get the amp going if I do the reset by holding the A preset and volume knob down while turning on the amp,

But this is not right!

Any way I am going to try a full update again and see what happens this time.

Thanks for the help.

Hello jaguar: thanks for your input. I though about what you said about the amp itself not knowing when to update with out being hooked up to the computer or ipad, and I thought it made sense so I tried turning the amp on again with no app or computer hook up .

But the problem persists. To answer your question, no I don't leave it hooked up to a computer. I have only ever used the ipad with the app. I did the update via the ipad.

I am going to try and redo the update later today, I'll let you guys know the result. Thanks for taking time to help!

Ok jaguar and Mr. Zap. I was able to go back to version 2.0 of the amplifi device without issues. It is not the most current version but it does what I need it to and I am a happy camper again! ( for now ) Lol!

Thank you for the help.
