Massive feedback when plugging Pod HD Desktop into Amp

So to save me carrying a head and cabinet to rehearsals, I just took my Pod HD desktop and plugged it into the FX Return of a tube amp they had in the studio.  The problem was that whenever I turned up the volume high enough to be heard over the drums, the amp started screaming with feedback.  I tried switching off the cabinet in the FX chain on the POD but it didn't seem to make much difference.

Is there something horribly stupid I'm doing here?

I'm going to ask the obvious, but, are you using your home recording/headphones patches? If thats the case, try setting up a new one through the amp next time. My recording patches have various stages of compression, overdrive, maybe some extra gain, some EQ's messing with levels, ETC, so that if I try and get them to performance level, even through a PA, I start getting feedback.

I have been running that way for years with my HD Desktop....Was this a high gain tone, a clean tone or both....If the amp is squealing on a clean tone, it could be a bad cable, but more likely bad tubes....If clean tones are sounding good and your problem is high gain and uncontrollable squeal....Most likely it's your pickups are not potted properly or the potting has degraded...gain down a bit or a Hard Gate on the front of the chain might help....just guessing....
