Thighten up Volume / Tone Knob

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I recently got a used Variax and I noticed that the Tone knob is loose. I tried to remove the knob but it is very hard. Has anyone done this. Do I have to open the scratchplate in order to tighten the knobs? Also the volume, tone and model knobs make noise when they are moved and there happens to be some dropouts. Maybe a cleaning will help?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I would also like to know how to change the resistance of the knobs, but for the opposite reason - the volume and tone knobs are too stiff to be rolled with a single finger and I have to use finger and thumb which makes violining impossible.

I do know one answer, which is of course to play with my knob a lot, thought I would get that one in before anyone else, but if there is some sort of resistance adjustment on the back it would be a lot quicker and easier on the wrist if you know what I mean  ;)

Yeah these things are so much easier on guitars that are made the old fashioned way ;-)

I tried this with my 600 and it made it worse, hence why I replaced the pots on the guitar.

Well depending on the problem it may or may not help, and whatever problem you had may have gotten worse, but it's unlikely to have had anything to do with the cleaner. I've used it countless times for decades and it had never once worsened a problem.

Mine probably was really bad. Sadly, replacing the pots killed the 1/4 jack.
