using volume pedal as external exp pedal

You'll need a special one that only goes to 10K ohms (iirc), which most (if not all) don't. It's not your normal volume pedal. I'd just go ahead and buy the Mission Line 6 pedal and be done with it. It works. It's sturdy. I do not work for them.

You can use an external volume pedal if your not going to try to go into the "pedal 2" jack on the pod. You can take, for example, an Ernie Ball volume pedal and go into the guitar input from the guitar so you could control volume before the POD or you could pipe it into the FX loop or you could put it between the POD's output and the AMP.

 

Not sure how it would work 'cause I don't have one but I was thinking about getting a passive volume pedal anyway, or maybe an active volume pedal. Not sure yet.

I haven't tried the Mission pedals, but anything has to be better than the shoddy and inaccurate Line 6 pedal. It was super cheap, though.

You ain't kidd'in, lol. I still use mine though and get away with it. You gotta just get the feel for it, lol, or pay up and get the better one.
