Antman74 Posted May 13, 2015 Share Posted May 13, 2015 Hi I've been using my POD in preset/patch mode and have some nice patches covering various styles. I usually have say a Fender type amp with different pedal effects in the chain to be turned on/off. I'd like to try Pedalboard mode tonight to see what that offers but at the moment I don't have an external AMP (yet). Can I still use the pedalboard mode and say place 8 effects (on switches 1-8)....and use an amp model from the pod? this seems the same as patch mode? or would the pedalboard mode need to utilise an external amp? pianoguyy Posted May 13, 2015 Share Posted May 13, 2015 Yes, you can use amps in 1-8 mode. It gives you 8 fx on/off buttons instead of 4. Which some people want. Others will use 1-4 mode and then assign multiple fx to be turned off with each switch. But that works well for some because they turn multiple fx on/off at the same time, while others need it done individually. And then there are people like me, who use a separate patch instead of turning fx on and off (wah is the one exception). *But be forewarned, if you are trying to load up all 8 switches with your favorite fx so that you only ever need to use one patch the rest of your life, you may run into DSP issues. I just wanted to add this for you... as a fairly new user to the unit myself. As a brand new user I thought it would be an advantage to have access to 8 different Effects from the one screen. In practice this does not really work that well, not for me at least. As an example : what if you want a different reverb, or a different delay, etc... You would have to change patches any way. This is something you will have to sort out for yourself. Keep plugging away! The more you use the unit the more light bulbs will Come on and you will find the best way to use it to your advantage. I just felt that I was starting to use the same amp and cabs but with different effects. I guess it's easy using the edit software to copy the amp set up and change the pedals. Overall though I'm pleased with the unit. That's not entirely true, unless you've already used up all 8 FX blocks for a given patch. Otherwise, you could easily have two different delays in the chain, and assign them both to the same footswitch. Depending on your playing situation, you may only need one thing. And certainly, once you find a niche that you like, you use it more --- that is how some people have their own unique tone. When was the last time you heard a Van Halen record and thought -- that tone sounds like Slash. Eddie has his own sound, he even sounds like him when playing with Michael Jackson. He found 'his sound' and stuck with it. When I was "in my youth", I was playing one style of music in one band (at a time). I needed one main setting - plus any fx. The next band needed one main setting, but different than the last one. The work I do today requires that I have everything at my disposal. Otherwise, I wouldn't be using near as much as I do. pfsmith0 Posted May 13, 2015 Share Posted May 13, 2015 Another difference you'll experience is the short mute you hear when switching between patches goes away when using FS1-8 mode. This makes ABCD mode unusable for me. There is no mute in FS1-8 mode. I switch patches only on a song-by-song basis when I don't care about the mute. But I think what the OP was hinting at was that he or she wanted access to 8 different Types of effects, not different versions, or families (if I may call them that) of delays, choruses, verbs, etc. I hope this was a bit more clear.
