Jtv-89 And Pod Hd500 - Great Rig - Now How Can You Do Wireless Using The Vdi Output?

I just bought a JTV-89 to use with my Pod HD500 - I updated all the software on the Pod and Guitar and It is a great rig.  I use the VDI cable because I want the guitar setting to be controlled by the Pod HD500.  I send a MIDI Program change from my sequencer and it sets up not only the Pod HD500 but the guitar also.  I just hate the cord.  I know I can use a guitar wireless rig thru the 1/4" analog output and get the sounds from the guitar but I do not get the control of the settings like you do with the VDI cable.  It is soooo easy to save a new Pod HD500 Program with all the Variax settings and when you start your new song on the sequencer, you don't have to touch any controls on the guitar.  Any plans on wireless VDI????

 

Also, a while back I wrote to see if you could use the MIDI CC 7 (volume control) on the Pod HD500 and that was not implemented yet.  Does anybody know if that has now been implemented?  I would like to control the master volume of the Pod HD500 from the sequencer sending MIDI control signals.

But, does that work on the HD family of pods? I haven't seen any hint of a variax w/l mode on the menus.
Anyway, there's been some time since those posts at vettaville were published, and L6 does have a line

of wireless products now. I'm not a huge fan of wireless, but if they ever make one for the JTVs that allows

for both channels + control to be transmitted, they can count me in.

Wireless VDI would be a bit more challenging than sending analog audio.  Not the least of the issue is the need to have a return data path for control of the guitar.  My sense is that a VDI-capable wireless system would be quite expensive and have a very limited base of potential customers.

Wireless VDI would only be of interest to POD users, but it could be integrated in a more extensive bidirectional wireless system. Instead of having a heap of boxes and batteries on my back I'd love to have one system that combine guitar, mic (headset) and IEM. It may be relatively cheaper to add VDI to a design that already implements a shared bidirectional digital link.

Hmm.  I forgot that newer hi-tech wireless rigs work in both directions for audio.  I wonder what kind of data rate and signaling is used to control a Variax?  If the bit rate is slow enough (and you knew the protocol in detail - not likely without a non-disclosure agreement) you could translate it to frequency-shift encoding like modems of yore.   Wonder if Line-6 engineering ever pondered that approach?

 

With enough patience the on-wire protocol could be reverse-engineered.  More work than I have time for...

 

But, even at that the audio path from guitar --> POD would be analog.  You'd need something like fast wi-fi for VDI digital out.

Line 6 Wireless systems are not analog ("studio-quality resolution with 24-bit A/D conversion", "enables Relay to deliver a [...] touch response that analog wireless systems simply cannot deliver.", "encoded digital transmission technology")... So I guess transmitting VDI would be easier than analog as you don't need to perform any A/D conversion !

Hopefully the brandwidth should already be enough.

 

Most of the work is already done :).
