Monitor Volumes on Stagescape m20d

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have recently purchased the M20d and have really not had any problem setting it up and getting a very good sound. The only Issue I have is the Monitor volume doesn't appear to go very high.  I have plugged the monitors into the mains out and the volume is fine then using all the same cables etc. So it has to be something on the stagescape side. I want to know is it supposed to be like this, or am I doing something wrong or is there a slight fault on the Mixer. Any answers would be much appreciated as we have a gig tomorrow.

many thanks

You don't say what the monitor speakers are or how you have them connected (L6Link or analog).

There are three things governing the monitor volume(s)

The amount of any individual channel fed into the monitor channel

The overall output level for the monitor channel

The gain setting on the monitor speaker.

Check all three. Likely, you've some disparity somewhere in the gain structures.

Hi thank you firstly for the reply, I will try to explain how I have it set up.

Firstly The monitors are connected via the group of four monitor outs, they are not L6 Monitors. However when I plug them in the preset that comes up is of a picture of a monitor with Line 6 (does this mean anything)

1) So at the moment all of the individual channels are linked to the monitor so I assume that they should all be the same gain as the feed going into the mains

2) The overall output of the monitor channel is most of the way up past the 0.0db

3) the gain setting on the monitor speaker is right the way up

Now I know if I plug them into the mains speaker output the volume would be far too loud, but it doesn't appear to be anywhere near what it should.

Now I am not saying the monitor level wont be enough but it is touch and go I would say. And I would have thought I could go a lot louder.

No. Each channel has its own Send level so that you can make the monitor mixes different from the main mix (e.g. so that each player/singer can hear themselves emphasized in their own monitor mix, or so that they don't hear some other instrument/singer). Check the Monitor Send level for each of the channels assigned to the monitor. The levels may all be too low by default.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I am not understanding you correctly but this is copied from the manual

Linked/Unlinked Buttons When a channel is in Linked mode, channel level is displayed along with monitor level, and the two levels maintain their relative settings when channel level is adjusted. When a channel is in Unlinked mode, its monitor level is independent of its channel level, so when its monitor level is set to a particular value, that setting won’t change when you increase or decrease its channel level. An easy way to think of the Linked/Unlinked concept is that Linked is post-fader and Unlinked is pre-fader. In other words, when a channel is Linked, its monitor level is relative to its channel level, so a baseline monitor mix can easily be established, since it will be the same as the main mix. Incremental adjustments can then be made quickly, i.e. just turn up the vocals a little more, and the monitor mix will replicate the main mix. Most input channels are in Linked mode by default, but channels such as guitar amps, that are usually loud on stage, default to Unlinked mode.

I apologise if these are stupid questions and I appreciate the replys

So if that is the case shouldn't the monitor Mix be the same as the Main mix with regards to levels etc. And then I don't understand why the monitor Is quiet

If all input channels are set to "linked" mode and their independent monitor gain levels haven't been altered then yes, what you'll get at the monitor output stage is a front of house mix (with or without FX)

BUT step two is setting the actual monitor output level. Consider it to be the master fader for that monitor.

Appendix D (D.9)

On the PERFORM screen, select "Show Faders". Then at the top, touch the "Outs" button.

You should then be presented with all the main output faders; monitor(s) and Mains (FOH)

If necessary, increase the output.

You can see the relative level on the fader meters. Do they look low, normal or high (ie are they running into the yellow, or staying well below 0 in the green?

If the faders are already quite a way up, it suggests that your gain structure further down in the chain is out, eg trim levels set too high.

Ok I have never selected the show faders section before. Maybe that is the problem I will try that out and report back.  I am hoping all the trim levels etc are right as I did the analyse part on each Mic and Instrument when setting up and saved them all. As I said before. We are really happy with the sound. This is myh only issue at the moment. So I will try it out later on or tomorrow.

Many thanks Si Watts and Silverhead

Cheers
