jkilgour Posted June 20, 2015 Share Posted June 20, 2015 I own a bunch of different guitars, and change the strings all the time without issue. My 2-year old JTV 69 still has the original strings on them - simply because I'm freaked out because everyone says that it messes with the setup, etc. should it be something I should be intimidated by? Or should o go for it? I bought a set of Elixer nano web 10's. If you don't recommend these strings, I'll pick up something else. Thoughts? talwilkins Posted June 20, 2015 Share Posted June 20, 2015 I'm not sure about the elixers, with the coating and all but apart from that there's no reason not to change your strings. I changed mine for a hybrid 'd addario EXL 125 set. I need to be able to bend the bottom E string fairly far and close to the nut, so the 10's didn't do it for me. cruisinon2 Posted June 20, 2015 Share Posted June 20, 2015 I will forever be mystified by anyone who can keep strings on a guitar for more than a couple of weeks. Unless you live in a desert, even unplayed strings will corrode just sitting there (for proof, I refer you to whatever is hanging on the wall at Any Music Store, USA). Months are unfathomable to me, let alone years. And even if by some miracle they're not rusting out from under your fingers, if you run your hand underneath the strings, and you can feel the indentation from each fret, they gotta go...tuning stability is far from infinite, to say nothing of tone. That said, there's nothing exotic about changing strings on a JTV. If you're sticking to the same gauge, nothing should change much. I expect the factory default is 09, where I tend to fit all my guitars with Ernie Ball 010, including this one. I had to change the action, due to a number of things: 1) the default action is a little to high for me, 2) with heavier strings a lower action is possible, 3) while changing the strings, the two pivot screws were somehow pulled somewhat higher out of the body, so I had to solve that by fastening them again. I did not replace them one after the other, but I usually remove all the old strings at once and then put the new ones on. With the sequential replacement (one at a time) I think the pivot screws stay in place as well. So, without the clumsiness and personal preference on my side, there is nothing tricky on changing the strings. In fact, with the locking tuners, is a real piece of cake. Changing from 009 to 010 causes the tremolo to be more 'sensitive' to bends (so lower E detunes if you bend the B or high E string). I still have to solve this by getting somewhat more tension on the tremolo springs. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dshow Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I too find string change is a pain with the Variax JTV-69. The first time i did it I took off all strings because I didn't know better and wanted to clean the fretboard.As it was mentioned before, changing one string at a time is much easier. I change the stings with 011s because af the better acoustic sounds. It need to be set up properly after doing this. But after that it works just fine. Oh okay.. the ones on there felt a little thin, and they had irregular windings on the tuner, so I assume that they were not the stock ones.. That's one of the most annoying aspects of the JTV-69 bridge / tailpiece design. When all the string tension is removed the tremolo springs and bridge plate act to pry the height adjust inserts out of the guitar. ClassicRkr Posted December 28, 2017 Share Posted December 28, 2017 I tried changing strings on my JTV-69, and after removing the high e, it seemed stuck, so I pulled it through with pliers and it felt like the string broke off. ReekHavok Posted April 4, 2018 Share Posted April 4, 2018 ClassicRkr, the tuning pegs had locks on the back side. You need o unscrew those to open the holes to let the string through.
