jasonk931
Hey guys. I have a Dimarzio Tone Zone I want to put in my JTV 59 black. I know it will void warranty, but I don't plan on sending this amazing guit anywhere except into the tonal universe of soundness...whatever that meant!??? Anyway, I want to swap it in the bridge position from the stock pup. I know their are other forum topics of similar topic, but none are answering the question? The Tone is a 4 wire pup, with same colors as the JTV stock pups. Now, here is the big part! I DO NOT want to even touch the circuit motherboard. Can I unscrew the pup where there is about 4 inches of wire available before it disappears into the body, snip it there, and attach each color to the corresponding color in the Tone Zone and use heat shrink to seal the deal and call it a day? Do all pups colors run in fashion? Lastly, the Tone Zone is High Output, so will this kill the response of the Piezo pup when modeling is engaged? Tone Zone is around 17kohms. Thanks guys. Have a blessed day, and may your strings last, your smile be forever and may callouses tell the tale that you Rock!
davidb7170
I replaced my 69S's single coils with DiMarzio noiseless single coils over 3 years ago. I followed the wiring diagrams found here: http://line6.com/support/page/kb/_/guitars/james-tyler-variax-guitars/jtv-pickup-wiring-diagrams-r64 It was pretty straight forward. I did not want to get into soldering on the 5-way switch connections, so I snipped the wires and soldered mine to the leads from the switch. I placed some heat shrink on the leads prior to soldering, then slid it down and shrank it. I have both the 59 & the 69S, but use my 69S the most -- been a Strat guy for many years. Never felt the need to swap out the 59 pups, but to each their own... Check your documentation on your color codes for the new one against the wiring diagram to be sure. You don't want to flip the polarity of the hot & ground. As far as the when the models are engaged, they are independent of the magnetic pups. You may want to level your models (using HD Workbench) up to or in the same ball park of the levels of you new pup so you don't have huge increases when switching from models to mags. I did this on both my 59 & 69S. On both of my JTV's, I use the mags probably 80 - 90% of the time when gigging. The models are very useful for specialty instruments and alternate tunings. I use them for drop D, drop Db, 1/2 and full step down, etc. When I up tune, I tend to just use a capo -- old habits and familiarity comes into play... Again, everyone to their own comfort zone. I don't thing replacing the PU's will void the warranty. If you replace the pickups and the main PCB goes, I would imagine L6 will fix it under warranty. Line 6 knows that a PU swap is unrelated to a defective PCB or jack or model switch or jack.
jasonk931
Great! Thanks for the tips and info guys! I'll be swapping pups in a few days.
Charlie_Watt
I would save the original pickups in case you need warranty work. You can put the original back in if you are worried about that. I don' t think they would void the warranty unless your swap led to the failure.
