First Gig With Sonic Port

Recommended Posts

I took my sonic port and ipad mini out on a gig over the weekend and it performed beautifully.  I play bass in a acoustic trio and already use the ipad mini for my sheet music.  I figured that I could also use it as my pre-amp for my bass.  Unfortunately Mobile POD does not have a bass amp nor can you sleep the screen and keep playing. Sonic port does work perfectly with Jam Up Pro.  I was able to tune my bass, setup my sound in Jam Up Pro and switch over to Forscore for reading my music.  And when I didn't need the music, I could put the screen to sleep and keep playing.  It only used 20% battery life for a two hour gig.

Wish list for POD Mobile:

sleeping the screen does not stop the sound

bass amps and effects

Why is it that nobody seems to want to acknowledge the elephant in the room, namely, LATENCY? The latency using any of the iPad apps is noticeable, occasionally annoying and definitely not up to the best performance standards. Using Audiobus propels latency into the comedy category. Or is it just me?

I am not getting any noticeable latency when using Jam Up Pro with Sonic Port.  I had three gigs over the weekend that I used it and no-one in the band noticed any difference compared to the hardware preamp I used before the Sonic Port.

It is interesting that you use Jam Up Pro, which I have no experience of. I wouldn't take too much notice of the others in the band though! Maybe it is better, I reckon Amplitube is lower latency than GB or Line6 but that's only my impression. I have not tested it. Live I would only use an iPad for things that are not too precious.

Thanks! I have tried the free Jam Up - its a very generous package, the sounds seem good and the latency seems very low. Once again, these are my impressions not any kind of test. I did some rudimentary calculations based on the speed of sound and how far away your amp has to be for the sound to take 20ms to get to you. Fuss about nothing? Maybe not if the amp is already 12 feet away.

I play bass and Jam Up Pro has lots of bass amp choices.  Mobile POD has none so I didn't even try it for gigging.  I do like playing guitar through it though.  I also have Amplitube but haven't tried it yet for bass yet.  I think it only has two choices.

I use iphone5 with mobile in and audiobus set to 256 frames, latency is barely perceptible (unless you set about deliberately trying to hear it)

Well, yes I do actually! Latency through a Vox AC30 is quite small. Can't say its ever bothered me

Alright, folks, this one is long but VERY worth reading!!!

So, Squeegy and all others....

found out about the whole "unable to play Mobile POD in the background" thing. I subsequently decided to load some music to the ipod to play along with. When I went to sync my ipad, it didn't sync and i started troubleshooting like a mad man. While I was in settings trying to mess with my ipad, I noticed that Mobile POD had an app-specific setting tab at the bottom of the settings menu (on the left hand side).

Well, long story short...

Settings -> Mobile POD -> Background Audio -> set to "On"

And, right underneath it, it says:

"Allows Mobile POD to continue to process incoming audio while running in the background. This is useful if you intend to use Mobile POD while operating other audio applications at the same time. Note: If an Audiobus connection is active, Mobile POD will continue to process audio in the background, regardless of the Background Audio setting."

Also, Squeegy -

great to hear another bassist is using this app/interface! I haven't tried it with a bass yet, but I'm pumped to give it a go now! Were you playing a passive or active bass? I run with the active crowd and I've got an 18V setup... worried about toasting the input...

And, to Line 6 -

We need to be able to power our ipads and play too! How can we get that working?

Also, why do we not have a plain ol' USB cable to connect this awesome portable I/O to our computers?!?!?

Squeegy/All Others:

I found out the hard way about how it doesn't play in the background right after getting it home from GC while trying to practice music from a web-based music ministry software. So, I decided to load music onto my ipad for the first time for the in-app player and it didn't sync. While I was troubleshooting like a madman, I saw that Mobile POD has it's own app-specific settings tab.

So....

Settings -> Mobile POD -> Background Audio -> set to "On"

:)

I did something productive today. Thank goodness.
