Fluffyone Posted July 21, 2015 Share Posted July 21, 2015 Supposing i am happy with the clean sound of my Marshall Valvestate VS100R.....i want to use the Marshall pre amp with maybe some delay & reverb & chorus from the HD500X, no amp modelling or cab sim. But i would like to use an amp model so that it bypasses the Marshall pre amp .....just using the Marshall as a power amp. I understand i would need to use an FX loop on the pod. The Marshall amp has an FX loop. Can anyone confirm if this is possible? It's been driving me mad for days! cruisinon2 Posted July 21, 2015 Share Posted July 21, 2015 Yes, this is more or less why the 4CM exists...to allow you the option of using either your amp's pre-amp (with or without using the POD's fx), or using the models and slaving the amp for power only. Personally I don't run this set-up, so I can't offer much of a tutorial, but there are numerous threads around detailing the how's and why's of the various connections. phil_m Posted July 21, 2015 Share Posted July 21, 2015 Yes, it's possible. You would just hook up everything in the regular 4CM setup. You'd want to put the FX loop block on HD500X right after your last pre effect. To use the HD500X's modeling, you'd just create a patch without using the FX loop block on the HD500X. PeterJH Posted July 21, 2015 Share Posted July 21, 2015 You need to check if your amp has a serial fx loop or a parallel fx loop. From what I've seen it looks like most Marshalls have parallel fx loops. You'll still be able to use the 4 cable method but you won't get the full functionality with this setup. I'm busy putting together a video tutorial demonstrating this exact setup but I'm using a relatively inexpensive Marshall MGFX100 head and a 2 X 12 speaker cabinet. The MG Marshall doesn't have a serial fx loop but it does have an fx "mix" control which if turned completely clockwise will behave like a serial loop. The tones that I've managed to generate with this solid state amp have been really impressive though. I hope to have this video completed in the next few days. Cheers. But when using a patch without the pod fx loop, IE, one that is sent to the power amp bypassing the Marshall pre amp. all sorts of weird interference happens that I can only get rid of by turning the Marshall amps fx loop knob down to almost silent. Obviously, this is because the amp fx loop is a parallel one and not a serial one. Has anyone successfully modified a Marshall VS100R amp fx loop from parallel to series?
