toonsms
Can someone correct me where I am confused? Thanks! In settings we have a Z setting for the guitar input. I have a bass with active pickups so a higher setting like 1M is appropriate. On section 2 of the Advanced guide it lists the Z's for various amps and pedals. My understanding is that this is so you can choose the order of devices to avoid loss in tone due to mismatched Z's. If the setting for the guitar input is supposed to match my instrument why is there the ability to match it to first device in chain? phil_m
This setting is really there to give you the opportunity to match what would happen if you plugged into the real pedal or amp. If you set the input-Z parameter to auto, the input impedance will change depending on whatever you have first in the chain. After that, what order you have effects in a chain does not matter, at least as it related to impedance. There is no loss due to impedance mismatches within the HD's internal signal chain. With active pickups, I you really shouldn't be hearing nearly as much effect from the input-Z parameter as you do with passive pickups. The pickups themselves don't experience the same sort of loading.
spaceatl
I use 3M in your situation (1987 Steinberger with EMGs)...matching is fine but sonic results improve slightly when between 1M and 3M with a 10K load IMO. Most active pup preamps are 10K...No real rules for this, you should use what sounds/feels better to you...One great use of the Z is using a lower Z on a bright strat...tames it a bit and allows you to ease up on the amp tonestack EQ some... davidb7170
I actually would like it if they could model the input Z selection for the VDI. I've messed with the input Z adjustment on my traditional guitars in the 1/4" guitar jack, and lowering the Z actually warms up the guitars, especially my Gretsch Country Gent. It can take some of the overly bright edge off of those guitars into a 1M - 3M input. I'd like some of the same flexibility with my JTV 59 & 69S via the VDI, would be just another tone shaper...
