I believe it works like this:

You have an account with Line 6 where you authorize and/or de-authorize your gear.

If you sell your HD500 you would normally de-authorize it before selling it. This frees up one of the (four ?) available units you can apply your model pack to. If the person you sell your HD500 to wants a model pack, they authorize their new HD500 under their account and purchase the model pack.

You authorize your new HD500X. Since you already purchased the model pack, you can apply it to your new HD500X.

If you don't / didn't de-authorize your old HD500, that complicates things. The buyer will still have access to the new model packs, but they can't update or re-flash their HD500 because that requires them to login to Line 6 with your credentials (unless it is someone you have shared your username and password with). In this case, you have lost one unit of the model pack that you can apply to your gear.

If I missed something or made an error, one of the fine folks here will clear it up. Hope this helps.

You can still flash at least the same version firmware and have the model packs remain intact. I would also suspect that if they ever update the HD series again, you would also be able to flash the newer version without losing the packs. Plus there is no need to log in to your Line 6 support account to reflash a device unless you count getting the firmware file using your web browser...

It is true. I've tried it. :) A firmware flash, and the model packs' retention, doesn't rely on whether or not a product is registered, and authorized, with Line 6. All you need is Line 6 Monkey, the firmware file, and the physical device.

However, at some point in the product's history, it must have been registered and authorized for the model pack(s). To get rid of the model packs from the device, one would have to manually deauthorize them (with USB connected), otherwise, the packs remain very happy where they are, even if you unregister your device from your Line 6 support account.

If I just sell my pod the pack will be on there and when I get the new pod X I can just download the model pack? That was easy

When, or right before, you finally sell your pod, deauthorize any model packs from your Line 6 support account as well as deregister the pod you're selling from your Line 6 support account. At this point any model packs are still on the device. If you want to get rid of any model packs from the actual device, you'll have to use the Line 6 License Manager application with the device connected to your computer via USB.

Then to get any model packs on your new pod X, just go through the same process you went through to get them on the pod you just sold. There is nothing really to download, it's just an authorization process to use something that's already there.

Yes. The pod has to be plugged into the computer via usb. Then with the pod turned on:

1. Run Line 6 License Manager. In order to do anything with this program, you have to log in to your Line 6 support account with this program.

2. Once you're logged in a list of devices that are powered on shows up on the left, in my case it's My Computer and POD HD500X.

3. Select the device that has the model packs you want to deauthorize from the device.

4. Select the deauthorize button.

I'm unsure if the above is what you want because I'm fairly certain this will block access to any model packs on the device itself.

If you just want to deauthorize and then unregister your device using your web browser and your Line 6 support account:

1. Log in to your Line 6 support account.

2. Account services.

3. My account.

4. Authorized devices.

5. Then click the X for the device you're selling.

6. Registered Gear.

7. Click the remove link for the device you're selling.

The above steps 1-7 do not rely on the device itself at all, so any model packs will remain accessible on the device.

You can also gift any model packs to the person you are selling to: purchase history -> details -> give as gift. Doing this will require you to purchase any model packs again for your newer X pod if you want them. Doing it this way, or removing access on the device you're selling and informing the person you're selling to that the device does not have the model packs, is most likely what is meant to happen.
